The best rereleased Speccy game by Alternative Software: discussion

Post by PeteProdge »

Yes, a while back I did a poll on the best Speccy game by Alternative Software, but here in December I mix things up and break my 'rules', giving you the opportunity to vote on rereleases.

So, purely on the titles reissued by Alternative Software as standalone budget bargains or as part of their compilations, these are the 76 tangible ZX Spectrum games I've identified:

Aliens (US Version)
Andy Capp
Attack On Atlantis
Australian Rules Football
Back To Skool
Bargain Basement
Big Sleaze, The
Big Trouble In Little China
Boss, The
Butch Hard Guy
Championship Baseball
Championship Sprint
Colour Of Magic, The
Confuzion
Cricket Crazy
Dandy
Danger Mouse In Double Trouble
Danger Mouse In Making Whoopee
Danger Mouse In Black Forest Chateau
Doombase
Double, The
Everyone's A Wally
Fallen Angel
Fernando Martin Basket Master
Firestorm
Flunky
Formula One (renamed as Formula Grand Prix by Alternative)
Freddy Hardest
Frightmare
Fury, The
Galactic Games
Game Over
GBA Championship Basketball
Gilbert: Escape From Drill
Graham Gooch's Test Cricket
Gunboat
Hellfire Attack
High Steel
Howard The Duck
Howzat
Hysteria
Implosion
Indoor Soccer
Jaws
Mega Apocalypse
Meganova
Micro Olympics
Moon Cresta
Mr Weems And The She Vampires
Munsters, The
Nosferatu The Vampyre
Oink!
Operaton Hormuz
Pheenix
Popeye
Rally Driver
Red Arrows
River Rescue
Rocky Horror Show, The
Rogue Trooper
Run For Gold
Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole, The
Skool Daze
Spindizzy
Spitfire 40
Splat!
Star Paws
Strike Force Cobra
Strike Force Harrier
Tarzan
Through The Trap Door
Tower Of Evil
Train Game, The
Trap Door, The
Turbo Girl
Uchi Mata

I can foresee Microsphere's two Skool games doing well

There were other brands owned by Alternative Software, such as Summit, Winner and React, who also reissued games from Alternative Software's acquisition of other company's software archives. I'll be covering those later on this month.

Let me know if there's a mistake with anything in the above. Thanks!

I won't be voting. I cannot split Trap Door, Skool Daze, Popeye, Everyones a Wally and Rocky Horror Show.
These are all amongst my top Speccy games of all time, it'd be like Sophies Choice.
I don't have anything cool to put here, so i'll just be off now to see a priest with yeast stuck between his teeth and his friend called Keith who's a hairpiece thief...

I think you need to start again with this one! Frightmare, The Double and Fallen Angel are Summit, Hellfire Attack, Spindizzy and Dandy are Winner, Tarzan is React. Red Arrows, Olympic Spectacular, Stelar/Starburst/Starbuster, Ice Attack, Stagecoach, Dotty, Super Shuffle, One Hundred and Eighty, Timewreck, Kidnap, Nightmare, Seasurfer/Windsurfer, Skuldugery, Ocean Racer/Yacht Race, Wheelie, Who Dares Wins 2, Yogi Bear, Yeti and Zoids are missing.

Cripes! I thought there might be a handful of discrepancies, but wow, so many I overlooked. You're very good at this!

However, I did do some checks and found that I did include Red Arrows (which is an Alternative re-release). Also, while Frightmare and Fallen Angel did appear under the Summit brand, they are also part of 4Most Fight & Fright, so count as Alternative re-releases. But thanks so much for the corrections. The list is now this:

Aliens (US Version)
Andy Capp
Attack On Atlantis
Australian Rules Football
Back To Skool
Bargain Basement
Big Sleaze, The
Big Trouble In Little China
Boss, The
Butch Hard Guy
Championship Baseball
Championship Sprint
Colour Of Magic, The
Confuzion
Cricket Crazy
Danger Mouse In Double Trouble
Danger Mouse In Making Whoopee
Danger Mouse In Black Forest Chateau
Doombase
Dotty
Everyone's A Wally
Fallen Angel
Fernando Martin Basket Master
Firestorm
Flunky
Formula One (renamed as Formula Grand Prix by Alternative)
Freddy Hardest
Frightmare
Fury, The
Galactic Games
Game Over
GBA Championship Basketball
Gilbert: Escape From Drill
Graham Gooch's Test Cricket
Gunboat
High Steel
Howard The Duck
Howzat
Hysteria
Ice Attack
Implosion
Indoor Soccer
Jaws
Kidnap
Mega Apocalypse
Meganova
Micro Olympics (renamed as Olympic Spectacular by Alternative)
Moon Cresta
Mr Weems And The She Vampires
Munsters, The

Well, if you're adding re-releases from Summit/React/Winner on the 4 Most compilations then you do need:

The Double from 4 Most Balls, Boots and Brains
Vixen from 4 Most Thrillers
Tarzan and Spindizzy from 4 Most Toppers
Dandy and Captain S(evilla) from 4 Most Megaheroes
W.A.R. from 4 Most Warzone
ACE 2088 and Hellfire Attack from 4 Most Airpower

and a few more missing:

Ghostly Grange and Brainstorm on Triple Decker 3
Classic Muncher and Classic Axiens on Triple Decker 4
Star Raiders II from Classic Arcadia 3
and A-Maze which came on the b-side of Dead or Alive

I think that's it!

I don't like any of those games :D

School daze is ok, a great technical achievement and lots of fun at first. But I like other games much more.
I don't rate the other games much.

The trap door is similar,it looks great, technically amazing...but it's just obscure puzzles...wandering about...

Absolutely NOT just wandering about. You did have to figure out what to do, but once you did, what a fun game. The worms went into the cup. The seeds got planted to grow eyeballs, then went into the giant vat to get crushed and it squished out into the glass bottle. The boiled slimies had to be collected (usally in the bucket) and then tipped into the giant pot. Then you used the green "thing" to heat them up. The bullet went on the trapdoor, then you shot it at the birds kazzooster to make him lay eggs, into the flat dish. Which went on the fire to make fried eggs. All on time limit. It was ACE! :)
I don't have anything cool to put here, so i'll just be off now to see a priest with yeast stuck between his teeth and his friend called Keith who's a hairpiece thief...
