An orange studded with cloves, which for reasons never entirely clear to us, we all used to get in our stockings.

Nope, never got that when we were young. Nearest thing to that was a Terry’s Chocolate Orange 8-)

Never heard of that @R-Tape,

I used to get a can of baked beans (amongst other stuff) in my dad's old RAF socks! Times were hard!

Sounds like he was giving you an improvised flail so you could go out and steal other kids' presents.

Luxury. When I were a lad, all me and me twelve brothers and sisters would get were a lump o' coal an' a good thrashing from our father's paddle.

I envy you both @1024MAK @PeterJ. A Chocolate Orange > Orange, and at least I could have used the beans. I never quite worked out what to do with the hellraiser orange.

Did nobody have the Orange with cloves then?

But that's what the grapefruit studded with carpet tacks was for...

Lucky ones. I got some packages of hardtack biscuits that were salvaged from half eaten field rations. And no socks.

Oranges in the stocking, yes, but not studded with cloves; they were reserved for the Christmas ham. And the stocking was one of my dad’s old kilt socks. No beans though.
