2d and other graphics modes

Post by marenja »

ZXDB now knows 3 variants of 2d graphics,

Side-view 2D Graphics
Top-view 2D Graphics
Perpendicular 2.5D Graphics

Other options for flat 2d are
1st-person (usually a view from a racing car, a crosshair for FPS shooters)
Behind view (racing genre is the only that comes to my mind)

Perpendicular 2.5D Graphics looks for me same as `Diagonal-down' view described at moby games https://www.mobygames.com/genre/diagonal-down/
Moby games has one more view - 3rd-person with short description 'The protagonist is controlled using a third-person view, but one that does not fit the other options or is open to interpretation.'

Are there any other non 3d options for (action) games view? Are there any not racing games that use behind view?

How can we describe view of board games like chess? Do we need to describe view of board games or 'board-view' information is enough?

Try to guess view of the games (e.g. Pac-Man Arcade - is it side view or top view?)
some examples picked from different groups

it's not "flat" even if some objects are flat (but are scaled according to the distance)
also even sprite racing games usually have 3d roads bending at one or two axis

Your description sounds like 3D perspective... Do you have any examples?

Mobygames classify "diagonal-down" when background is top-view but characters are side-view. That's not perpendicular 2.5D.

Except for a few 3D board games, everything else is 2D top-view.

All these examples are 3D perspective.

Notice how parallel lines meet towards the horizon (especially the road), and all objects (cars, enemies, walls, etc) get smaller in the distance.
