MAD Cover Artist

Post by Wizwords »

Does anyone have any idea who the cover artist was behind Mastertronic's early MAD games?
I always loved these comic strip style covers.

The artwork was good but I didn't like that rather drab spotted background framing; I much preferred full-page images. I guess it's an attempt at brand-recognition marketing. I always associate that style with re-releases; I wouldn't look at repeated designs like that and immediately think 'Ooh, a series of wholly new and original games'.

I think John Smyth was responsible for a fair few of them, I did think Ray Owen did some but I sort of now think he did the nice loading screens.
John recalls: "Despite my absolute ignorance of computers (I only bought one about three years ago) I found myself designing game covers for Mastertronic through a studio called 'Words and Pictures' for whom I'd done illustration work previously."

If they are John's, they're in a completely different style

Pretty sure Ray just did the loading screens

John has previously said that Con-Quest and Master of Magic are not his.
