The best re-released full price game on a YS/Crash/SU covertape: shortlist votes for #-J

Post by PeteProdge »

Right then, this is not the proper poll - not just yet. There have been 190 re-released full price games on the YS/Crash/SU covertapes, but phpBB polls can only run to a maximum of 127 options. I need to do some elimination, so, from 26th May to 2nd Jun, I'm presenting all these games in two simultaneous polls - splitting them in half, alphabetically

Here are half of the games from the early part of the alphabet (#, A-J) - 95 of them!

You have up to five votes. Use these votes to indicate GAMES YOU LIKE. The aim is to reduce the list of 190 games to 127 (or fewer), by taking out the vote-less games (or, if necessary, the ones with lowest votes), then on Sun 2nd Jun, we run the whole poll on that shortened list. Hope that makes sense!

There is a LOT to get through and it's taken me hours to compile the links and screenshots. Pick carefully!

(The shortlisting poll for the K-Z games is here)

Okay, I've spotted two mistakes! Mastertronic's Amaurote and Boulderdash IV Construction Kit are listed in here, but they came out on budget first, they were never full price games. I hold my hands up, that's not right. Consider them eliminated anyway, so don't waste your vote on trying to keep 'em!

I have decided to favour these five:

Chaos because it is The Greatest Game On Any System Ever. You didn't think I'd ignore this, eh? You know this makes sense. And in an ideal world, this would definitely win the poll. It might, it might not. I can remember that time we did this on initial letters and it got unfairly beaten by Chase HQ in the C poll. (Yes, Chase HQ on the Speccy outdoes the coin-op original, which is jaw-dropping, but... it's not Chaos and that's a fail.)

Cyclone. A beautiful open world game you can be lost in for hours. And yes, of course I'll be wanting to favour its 'twin brother' T.L.L. in the other poll.

Gilligan's Gold. Gloriously silly. And no, I've never heard of Bagman and it's audacious that Ocean ripped it off. Still, this is all kinds of wonderful.

Crystal Castles. The coin-op eluded me, but I'm very happy to play this daft cutesy isometric (or probably not, I feel a pedant would argue it isn't) effort.

10th Frame. I'm not mad about sports games, but this had me addicted for a whole week. I became very good at it, almost always scoring strikes at one point.

Bubbling under? Firelord didn't make my cut. I kinda regret that I didn't extend the poll choices to six now!

I've gone for Ant Attack, Chaos, Cyclone, Halls of the Things and Heavy on the Magick.

I'm also fond of the occasional game of 10th Frame and Gilligan's Gold, but the bar is particularly high here.

Impossaball, both Dynamite Dans, Crystal Castles, Deathchase.

There are probably better games on here but I've never sat down and worked out what to do in, say, Ant Attack or Heavy on the Magick.

Pete will like my first vote. I’m going more by how much these games were played having been on cover tapes, then by how much I played the game if not.

1 Chaos
2 Empire!
3 Ad Astra
4 Bumpy
5 Astroclone

But wow, what a list of games!

I move to exclude Chaos, on the grounds that its divine supremacy should not be challenged by any mortal vote.

I went for these, in no particular order.

Dun Darach - Terrible posture, enthralling adventure.
Boggit - Maybe this should be Bored of the Rings, whatever both fun.
Fat Worm Blows a Sparky - This is proper good, and deserved the extra audience from the cover tape.
Alien Highway - Maybe should be be Highway Encounter? Both good.
Evening Star - The quintessential cover tape game. I never would have bought it, but getting it for 'free' let me check it out and potentially develop a financially ruinous Train Simulator DLC habit.

This is too much a list to actually vote for only 5, so I'm just choosing one out of some essential categories and vote for one of them.
(I am currently choosing the bolded ones, but might change later)

In random order:
  • Bedlam / Hate / Beach Head. From the Shooters category. Bedlam has especially colourful graphics, great music and a great minigame.
  • Dustin / HOTM. Great arcade adventures. I've finished both and they are both great.
  • Fox Fights Back / Hydrofool. From the category: Satirical(?) games with really funny graphics. FFB has animals that look human, and Hydrofool has funny back story as well, but I think I like Sweevo better.
  • Cyclone / Highway Encounter / Alien Highway / HATE. Vortex games are great and there should be at least one in.
  • Heroes of Karn / Jewels of the Babylon / Boggit. All good text adventures, and one should be in.
Among the games that didn't got onto the top 5 categories were: Bumpy (as a great puzzle game), HKM (I like the digitised graphics, and the easy gameplay), Captain Blood (nice space exploration game). And probably a lot of others.

But as I said, I might swap these instead of the other 5, as well. Too many good games here.

It's safe to say that Chaos will breeze through the qualification phase, so I've given my votes to the following also-rans:

Chubby Gristle, Cyclone, The Famous Five, How To Be A Complete B...., Jewels Of Babylon.

Lots of great ones in there, but these are getting my vote.

Ant Attack by Quicksilva
Bumpy by Loriciels
Chaos by Games Workshop
Deathchase by Micromega
Dynamite Dan II by Mirrorsoft

Android 2, Alien Highway, Beach-Head, Crystal Castles, Dun Darach, Firelord, Highway Encounter, Impossaball were all contenders.
