Hi everyone :-)

Whether it's Mire Mare or a BASIC tape you found in the attic, it needs to be preserved digitally. Post here and experts can help to do so.

Hi everyone :-)

Post by Frankie »

Frankie/Denmark calling :-)

Some time ago I started to go through my huge collection of pirat tapes and originals to transfer all the stuff that's not on WOS. I've keept record of it on the WOS board, but have in the meantime realised that WOS seems more slow than I expected, and I was told this is THE IN place for Spectrum software these days. Therefore I'll also from now on upload stuff here. I'm not sure yet what this site keeps, and think is important. Like, is small basic programs probably never released, and maybe not even been published as type-in programs of interest on here?

I tend to transfer anything where there is an author name in the file, or the game/utility looks good, but some might think this is going to far?

Well, to start off, I'll now list everything that I've added on the WOS board so far, that hasn't been added yet on Spectrumcomputing.com. That might be because you guys weren't aware, or that you don't think its suited to be added. How do you guys feel about TZX files of pirated stuff? Like I found Find the Link by M.I. Mander which is MIA, and I suppose its better having a TZX or TAP of pirat copy than having nothing, right?

Well, on we go. All this I've not been able to find in your excellent database. Take what ever you need for next update :-)

----------------------------
FROM ORIGINAL TAPES:
----------------------------

THINK ONE OF THESE VERSIONS IS MISSING HERE :-)

Title: Fireflash (Variation 1)
Year: 1983
Company: Abacus
Author(s): Kevin Flynn
Type: Game
Message Language: English
Source: Original Tape
Filetype: TZX
Reason for Upload: Perfect TZX Image
Note: This is variation 1 of Fireflash. The differences to variation 2 is that filenames are different, different start-up screen and different build up of loading screen. It's my theory that this is the first release, which was released late 83. Both variants have the exact same inlay.

IMPORTANT: Unfortunately, this TZX have been made from a mis-production, where they forgot to put the second game 'Destroyer' on the B-Side. It states on the inlay, and on B-Side label that it should contain 'Destroyer', but B-Side is blank. Don't think they were all released like that.

Title: Fireflash (Variation 2)
Year: 1983
Company: Abacus
Author(s): Kevin Flynn
Type: Game
Message Language: English
Source: Original Tape
Filetype: TZX (Also incl. scans of inlay and instructions)
Reason for Upload: To replace TAP file on WOS with Perfect TZX Image
Note: This is variation 2 of Fireflash. The differences to variation 1 is that filenames are different, different start-up screen and different build up of loading screen. It's my theory that this is the second release, released on the compilation 'Space Odyssey'. I got this original in a bundle on Ebay, also including the 3 other Abacus games that was released on that compilation in a cardboard package, therefore I believe they all came from that compilation which was released late 84. Both variants have the exact same inlay.

Title: Santa
Year: 1986 *
Company: Top Spec
Author(s):
Type: Compilation (Games)
Message Language: English
Source: Original Tape
Filetype: TZX
Reason for Upload: Perfect TZX Image
Note: This is not a single game as claimed on WOS, but a compilation including more games (**). Also Array files for Spec Detective on side A, proves that Top Spec must have released a game/compilation called 'Spec Detective' before this, otherwise it would be silly having these Array files on this tape

* WOS claims this was release in 1987. However, if you list Haunted House, it says (c) Top Spec 1985 on top of listing. Also, when you load Upman, it says in the scrolling text that this is the short version with 7 screens, and that a longer version will be released January 1987. My guess is therefore that this was released for Xmas 1986, maybe 1985

** Side A: Santa - Spec Detective (Array files) / Side B: Haunted House - Specword - Upman

We can conclude out of this that these titles should be added to WOS: Haunted House, Specword and Upman as part of this compilation, and Spec Detective on its own.

INLAY SCAN

Full Title: Cowboy Shootout
Year: 1983
Company: Micro Power Ltd.
Author(s): Program Power (David Aubrey-Jones)
Type: Arcade: Shoot-em-up
Message Language: English
Upload includes: Inlay scan
Source: Original Game
Filetype:
Reason for Upload: There is no scan of inlay on WOS

Full Title: Spectrum & Spectrum+ Assembly Language Course (1986 Edition)
Year: 1986
Company: Glentop Publishers Ltd.
Author(s): Martin E. Thompson
Type: Utility: Assembler
Message Language: English
Upload includes: TZX file of program (Side A+B), Inlay scan (Front and Back), and photo of tape label (Side A+B)
Source: Original tape
Filetype: TZX
Reason for Upload: To replace HoneyAssembler.tzx on WOS which isn't complete, as it misses the B-Side, and also to add Inlay (front and back), which isn't on WOS
Note: As you can see on photos of tape it says (c) GLENTOP 1986. It was advertised in Sinclair User in 1985 and 1986 with very little differences to the inlay. So I guess HoneyAssembler(different).tzx on WOS is the 1985 Edition, which is complete with the BIN/HEX program on side B

Reason for Upload: uMIA title
Note: French version of Longman Software's release Sum Scruncher. I wonder how many of Longman's programs were released in French, as I can't find any on WOS.

PIRAT TAPES / NOT From originals:
------------------------------------------

ALTERNATE VERSION:

Title: Alien
Year: ?
Company: Hirezz Games
Author(s): Gary Howland
Type: Game (Maze)
Message Language: English
Source: Not original tape
Filetype: TZX
Reason for Upload: Different to the TAP version on WOS
Note: This is the same game as entry 'Alien' by 'Gary Howland' on WOS, but unlike the TAP version on WOS (I changed it to a WAV file to check), this one code only game includes a loading screen, which states that it was released by Hirezz Games. Probably the Author Gary Howland's own company he ran out of his bedroom So Company should be changed from Gary Howland to Hirezz Games on WOS.

Company: PSS
Author(s): ? Chris P. Cullen ? who also did the ZX81 release of this game by PSS
Type: Game (Maze)

Filetype: TZX
Reason for Upload: Different version to the one on WOS
Note: Both 16K and 48K version don't have the loading screen, and doesn't say "(C) P.S.S 1983" on startup screen. Early version, or first attempt before polishing it with loading screen and all?

Full Title: Aktie-Børs
Year: ?
Company: Video Software Ltd.
Author(s): ? (Conversion: Norman Software)
Type: Strategy: Management
Message Language: Danish
Upload includes: TZX file of game and JPG showing start of basic listing
Source: Not from Original tape
Filetype: TZX
Reason for Upload: Not even mentioned on WOS
Note: This is Conversion of a ZX81 game to fit the ZX Spectrum. The game converted is Stock Market from Video Software Ltd. which was released for the ZX81 in 1981. Proof of this can be found on JPG picture, which shows top of basic listing. Got no idea if this conversion had a proper release, or just done for fun. I also think that Norman Software is the same as Norman Data, which are registered on WOS.

DON'T KNOW IF STUFF LIKE THIS IS LISTED ON HERE, IF IT MIGHT NOT BE A PROPER RELEASE?

Company: ?
Author(s): ?
Type: Arcade: Frogger
Message Language: English
Upload includes: TZX file of game
Source: Not from Original tape
Filetype: TZX
Reason for Upload: Not even mentioned on WOS
Note: This is probably a Type-In from a mag. If you think it looks familiar, then that's because graphics and layout reminds a lot of Jogger from Severn Software. Maybe this is an early version

Year: 1983
Company: M.I. Mander
Author(s): M.I. Mander
Type: Game: Quiz (not a puzzle as stated on WOS)
Message Language: English
Upload includes: Game file
Source: Not from Original tape (But as its one long program, I doubt it would be different from Original tape)
Filetype: TZX
Reason for Upload: MIA on WOS
Note: Was so pleased when I found this game in this huge collection, as I remember having it back then on a tape collection of 3-4 90 minutes Maxwell tapes, which are long gone. I copied all the "good" games from those tapes to new tapes back then, but this game did not make the cut. Wonder if there were more MIA on those tapes I decided not to copy over, oh well

Author(s): Eric Reiss, Maz H. Spork
Type: Adventure: Text
Message Language: Danish
Upload includes: Game file
Source: Not from Original tape
Filetype: TZX
Reason for Upload: Different version than the Z80 file on WOS
Note: This must be a pre-production version, as unlike the Z80 file on WOS, this one doesn't have a loading screen, and you can break into the listing in this version. Time to explore

Hi Frankie,

Speaking from the text adventure side of the community, any games of that sort (whatever the source) would be of great interest to us.

I'll mention that one to Jacob at CASA as he's probably best placed to evaluate it.

Thanks for the link, very interesting. Would never had imagined they sold 300 copies. Wish I had one of them

I've uplaoded a few adventures, but think this place have taken them all. Some of them weren't in English. It was also me who uploaded the Castle of Terror including loading screen. Wish I had part 2 aswell, but doubt it was ever made :(

Hi Frankie! Welcome to Spectrum Computing! Feel at home.

I followed your thread at WOS and if I remember correctly, some of your stuff has been already uploaded to SC but others may have a more detailed info.

There are some really interesting widely unknown games in your collection. Thanks for sharing them.

Yes, I checked this site first to see what have been added. All the above hasn't been added yet, so feel free to take whatever you want. The original of Croque Nombres, and Andromeda/Willibald should go up for sure :)

Aye—thanks Frankie. I've started collated this stuff, taking screenshots where appropriate etc. It'll take a little while, but it should be on the site in about a week.

I'm (very slowly!) working through these. Isn't Andromeda/Willibald just the German language version of Willibald? So the files should be added to that ID? I don't think this should be a uMIA with a different ID.

The one already online is also German isn't it?

This is an original release with two games on instead of just Willybald, so I think it deserves it own ID.

As I write I think this version is newer than the Willybald online, but of course you could mention that Willybald later was released on this compilation slightly modified, and just keep one ID :)
