Old unknown game found: GUP
Old unknown game found: GUP
A new-old game is discovered
A man called Jon Burton, who is currently an active modern games developer decided to share his first game with world. It was written in 80s when Jon was just 14-15.
The game is called GUP and here's the author's Youtube video:

In the video he talks that he sent it to some publisheer but it wasn't good enough for them. It's a shame as we know much worse stuff was published (SQIJ anybody? )
Some screenshots here on a Russian site:
http://idpixel.ru/games/gup/
And the download if you missed it in the links:
http://idpixel.ru/games/g/gup/files/gup_z80.zip
Admins, as the author shared it himself, I suppose you can add it to database.

Re: Old unknown game found: GUP
Nice find.
Always great to see relics like this, come back from the twilight zone.
The same INK/PAPER trick, was a nice idea to minimize complexity.
The teleport to avoid the weird screen memory layout, was also a nice dodge
Some graphics are nice, but others just look like "programmers art"
But the great part was the learning, like the author reports.
P.S.
Admins, could try contact the author to get permission.

Re: Old unknown game found: GUP
Yep the plan is to do both these. Apologies if things don't appear to be moving very quickly, we're a bit snowed under at the mo(Peter might literally be!) and there is a backlog to work through.
I love these old finds too, like Globus. Looks pretty good this, especially for aged 14-15. As I've said before, I was just about toilet trained at that age!

Is there a chance to get a TZX image of this game? Maybe asking Jon we could know something.
Re: Old unknown game found: GUP
I asked Jon this back in Jan '18, he said he'd look into it if he had time. I've just pestered him again now. It'd be be nice to get a TZX and proper loading .scr for the GUP entry. Let's see.Neil Parsons wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2019 2:01 pm Is there a chance to get a TZX image of this game? Maybe asking Jon we could know something.

Would someone mind converting this WAV to a TZX? I don't have access to the tools ATM.
Thanks Jon!
Re: Old unknown game found: GUP
Certainly.
I've also taken the small liberty of creating a regular .tap version too, no tricks/changes merely used a ZXE to build a .tap from the .tzx (from the .tzx not from the .wav)
.tzx here and .tap here , please open each link in a new tab/window etc. Just wait a moment then pick the 'slow download' option.
I can't at the moment put them "somewhere else" however its OK for now I guess (file life 30 days with the free host etc) which should be enough time for them to be properly hosted etc.
Both load OK anyway as does the original .wav.

Put it up on my website temporarily.
P.S. Fuse users: Disable the Tape Traps option.
Oh, hey, spider beat me to it!
I believe both of our versions are identical, so pick whichever one you like.

Every man should plant a tree, build a house, and write a ZX Spectrum game.
