If there was one more level...

Post by PeteProdge »

Fantasy gaming wishes time. Again. If you could bolt on another level to some classic Spectrum games...

Target Renegade by Imagine

As we know it: You've defeated the boss in the games room, having back-kicked with all your might. That's that over and done with, the crime syndicate is finished?

The extra level: No, there's an even bigger and nastier figure waiting for you. He's in the cellar, surrounded by three people (of equal strength to the previous boss) as his minders. There is a convenient way to dispatch some of the bad guys, by fly-kicking a switch that'll drop a barrel on their heads, if they're in the right place.

ATV Simulator by Code Masters

As we know it: You've conquered the six levels, Sand Duning; Grasstrakin (sic); Icebergs; Pyramids; Tropicana and Swamp.

The extra level: Quarry. A lot less cartoonish than the existing levels. Boulders are strewn about, there are some pits and puddles to navigate. Admittedly, this isn't quite as exciting as what's actually in the game as we know it, but a lot more realistic.

Horace Goes Skiing by Psion

As we know it: You come to the end of the slalom and that's that.

The extra level: The Apres Ski. You're at the Swiss lodge, knocking back a few glasses. The action resumes as you have to drunkenly navigate your way back to your chalet, without knocking yourself into any other skiiers.

More levels in The Way of the Exploding Fist, just for the cool landscapes shown.

In the background you can clearly see the filming of 70s and 80s BBC Sci-fi shows Dr Who and Blake's 7.

I quite liked the multi-screen efforts of Horace goes Skiing and (maybe less so) Horace and the Spiders.

Maybe Hungry Horace could have a "post-park" Daley-Thompson style level.

After exiting the park, Horace is being chased along the main road and has to do the pound left/right & jump to escape the chasing park keepers and jump over obstacles. At later levels (i.e. multiple keepers) the new ones get faster, and put more obstacles in the way.

Well, not really.
Shoot aliens and they might drop a fuel pod or a jewel that gives a speed up, slow down, shield or just an extra points. Collecting parts of the rocket, bunging them on the rover and taking them to a constructing point, bunging them together, finding fuel pods and blasting off.
With all the add fun of Lunar Jetman of destroying the alien bases.

Some Spectrum games converted from arcade are much shorter than originals.

A good example would be Ghosts'n'Goblins.

I would really love to see a Spectrum remake of it with all levels. Actually it was done on C64 recently:

There's also a game called Forgotten Worlds which has 4 levels on Spectrum and over 10 on arcade.

Oh, Bubble Bobble is the definitive example. Arcade is 100 screens and I think the Speccy version is just the first 80. Mind you, to get that much into 48K and have gameplay virtually identical to the arcade, is quite an impressive feat.
