Nightshade or Gunfright?

Post by Juan F. Ramirez »

Filmation 2 were not as successful as the original Filmation. 'The scenery scrolls rather than ‘flicks’ as you move from one location to another and there are no objects which you can shunt about and use whilst playing', as Crash pointed out.

But if you want to choose one... what's your fave?

Mine Nightshade as both are similar in gameplay, but the plot and the atmosphere takes the lead for me. Curiously a game that I enjoy more nowadays than back then.

Gotta go Gunfright.

Ditto. Plus the shooting mini-game.

Also, Filmation 2 -- it seemed to me at the time miraculous. Still does, actually: how on earth could the humble Speccy manage something like that? This kinda links back to a discussion elsewhere on these forums, where learned folks kindly tried to help me understand scrolling ('dixel' scrolling specifically). I'd just about got my head around the idea of pre-drawn tiles but... I can't begin to see how that applies to a system like Filmation 2.

Edit: I just skim-watched a couple of clips on YouTube. I'd forgotten how much more colourful Nightshade is. I wonder why Ultimate dropped the coloured walls for Gunfright?

Nightshade was the fist game I bought directly from Ultimate, arrived in a jiffy bag with Ultimate postmark. Got lots of huge posters afterwards.

Nightshade just a bit better than Gunfright. Although both games had the aimless searching for the nasty guys, Nightshade had a few other things to do to during the game such as playing god with the lower nasties by firing different anti-bodies at them to see how they mutate and trying to keep 5 fires alive on screen at the same time.
The huge map of Nightshade gave ample time to roam around and find required objects.

Gunfright had a few fun parts, the panto horse and a smaller map to explore. The let down again is the aimless search for the baddie and the stupid tpwmfolke that instantly kill the player.

Both games can have their map edited too....

You know what? I always believed that Gunfright was earlier game and Nightshade was later as Nightshade seems to have improved engine over Gunfright, especially by having some more colour.

But the database says that Nightshade is from 1985 and Gunfright is from 1986 so I was wrong and your question is very valid.

I like Gunfright best: the sense of progression as you gun the various outlaws down, the mad rides on the fake horse, plus the Western setting - which I like so much but unfortunately is not so common on the Spec - are all reasons that make me prefer it over Nightshade.

That's not to say Nightshade is bad, far from it; but back in the day as well as now, I still enjoy Gunfright more.

It's worth mentioning that at the end of 2017, was released Gunfright Returns a remix of this great game, with many improvements, including Amstrad's music and much more.
Here's the detailed changelog (from original zx.pk.ru thread) and download link:
Spoiler
0. Difficulty - several preset sets of other options
- Easy is an immortal version
- Medium is the recommended balanced set
- Hard is a habitual set for everyone. To make it even more difficult,
Add Bandits Mad and Head Prices Poor

1. Town is the starting city. In addition to Blackstone heres
another hundred cities to the west, and you can choose and the random city of many
thousand generated. Each of the two players will then have their own!

2. View new town map - a map of the new city will be displayed for a short time
Before the sheriff moves to him.

3. Bandits - the danger of bandits for the sheriff
- Jokers - bandits do not kill anyone to death, but on the way back
- Mean - bandits are as dangerous as in the original
- Mad - bandits kill in a skirmish in the city, and if the sheriff dare
To injure them, and lose in a duel, then, after killing him, they go straight to
his office and arrange (censorship). Somewhere with the 7-8 bandit is already very difficult!

4. Head prices - prices per head
- High - premiums as in the original
- Moderate - premiums slightly lower
- Poor - premiums are ridiculous, first you will have to pay a salary,
which, when the sheriff becomes poorer to $ 100, appears scattered around the city
bags, near the boys, where to go

5. Cacti - cactus danger
- Flowers - will have to return to the start, but life is saved
- Poisonous - cacti are dangerous, as before

6. Tumbleweed - the danger of rolling the field
- Absent - percity field will not appear even after 8 dead bandits
- Sim - roll-field will sometimes stop, as if impulsive
wind. You can not shoot them, when the collision returns to the start,
but life is not lost
- Windy - once appearing, the roll-field continually roll around the city,
life does not take away
- Poisonous - roll-field is dangerous, as in the original, be careful,
seeing the boy, since the roll-field will be nearby

7. Townsfolk - the danger of civilians (women and children)
- Scared - women panic running around the city, the boys point,
where the sheriff will go to intercept the bandit. In a collision,
as in the case of their accidental killing by the sheriff, a fine is deducted, but life
not retracted. After the collision, go back to the start
- Vindictive - cunning mode. The inhabitants are no more dangerous than in Scared mode,
but only so long as the sheriff does not shoot or move a horse
one of them. Then the sheriff himself will become a bandit (this is noticeable,
as the inscription BOUNTY at the bottom of the screen turns red) and all the trainers that store
life, turn off until the sheriff either does not shoot at least
one gangster, or he will not fall himself. Since, even when confronted with some kind of
there is a roll-field, he will not escape lynching. Thus, one can either
play the role of an honest guardian of the law, avoiding killing innocent people, or
play cool, still fly, sweeping everything in its path, but quickly
ridding the city of the rest of the scoundrels. Or smoothly move from one
to another, when someone accidentally cuts the sheriff into a horse.
- Mean - residents are dangerous, as in the original

8. Extra guns - prize-winning lives
- No - as in the original, only the sheriff and his two assistants (deputies)
- After each gang - after each gang of 4 bandits is rendered harmless,
expect replenishment. Of course, if life was lost so that the states do not
To inflate - more than two assistants to the sheriff will not give
- each gang after 4th - it is necessary to neutralize 16 famous bandits, then
different nameless rascals will go, and then the replenishment will begin to arrive

9. Travel west - whether to move to the next city to the west
- No - as in the original, the sheriff works in his native city
- After each gang - after each gang of 4 bandits is rendered harmless,
the sheriff goes to travel
- each gang after 4th - having neutralized 16 bandits, the sheriff will go in search of
adventure. In every new city, another gang is waiting for him

M. Mouse enabled - use mouse scrolling when selecting Kempston

J. Mouse disabled - if the mouse is not found automatically, or just hinders

A. AY + Beeper - many effects will be played by the music coprocessor

B. Beeper only - if there is no coprocessor, or extra memory, or need retro sounds

N. None - silent mode without sounds

Many thanks to the authors, TomCat, Goodboy and others... you did a great job. :)

I also noticed yesterday, quite by accident...
Maybe I should have put this info in another thread, but I hope Einar or forum admins will add this version, at least, as a mod or remake.

It's a crack/mod. I'm not sure what is the official policy of ZXDB about such stuff.

There are plenty of JSW mods in ZXDB, so I presume this should be included.
