The Computer Cookbook

Post by R-Tape »

I wonder if one single person has EVER thought: "What do I fancy for tea?", then gone upstairs, turned on their Speccy, inserted The Computer Cookbook cassette, waited for it to load, perused the many recipes, or even the menu planner, took on board the wine suggestion (which of course they will have in their cellar), printed it all out, then gone downstairs and cooked it! Anyone?!

It's published by Bug-Byte as well, so they clearly thought this genre had legs.

Either way, It's fun to look back on this. Overall it's pretty posh, but things like Stuffed Peppers—which nobody ever really liked—reflect 1980's tastes.

If you ever do make one, post it in this thread!

Heh yes. Of course you don't have to move your Speccy to your kitchen if you have a bogroll printer.

The Home Computing Weekly feature dates it somewhat as well. The BBC version was done by a husband and wife team, here are some quotes from Mrs Smith:
Women don't use computers, so what can you do to attract them?
Most women have 200 or 300 recipes in their minds, but you forget them all and end up cooking chips every day.
Ian Hoare, the Speccy author, said his version started as a bit of a joke!

Please stop posting links to old computer magazines!!! I've just spent 45 minutes, yes 45 minutes trawling through them

I've also spent an inordinate amount of time on The Computer Cookbook and am now looking through my cupboards to see if I've got all the ingredients to make Elizabethan Pork for 200!! Now where can I get 133.5 stalks of celery at this time of night?

Sod that—where the heck am I going to get "Danelard" for my Stuffed peppers?! I might have to resort to plan B: get normal lard and make Marjoram Tokány.

I doubt that fateful petrol station café served Verdelno Madeira or Amontillado. Might have to settle for Tizer...

I gave it a try and the beggining is not what I expected...

Image

I tried an onion soup (*bleeeurgh!*) for 99, using imperial units (to get the best results! )

Image

I think I'm going to puke...

The suggested wines are Sercial Madeira and as cheaper alternative a Fino Sherry. I'll follow his advice!

The best feature of the program is when to try to press the BREAK key, it's got the best anti-hacker method ever seen:

Sounds quite nice to me! Not sure about making 40 pints of it though.

I fancied looking at the code too, then noticed the anti-hack. I could have a look at the code later, but does anyone know the usual ways around the popular BREAK protect sofware?

:o :o :o This is ace as I actually love onion soup. It's my favourite of all the soups. Could I consume a batch for 99? not sure, but I'd be willing to give it a try.

POKE ‭65326‬, 233.

There are some amusing error messages in the program if you LIST 8510.

I saw an advert for Amazon Alexa where it was reading out recipes, and I thought to myself we had something similar in the 1980s!

Nice thread by the way R-Tape. I love those threads that run and run!

But Alexa doesn't suggest as good wines to accompany as Mr. Hoare does!

So is anyone going to have a crack at one of the recipes along with the recommended wine? :)

I would, but, considering the only veggie recipe is stuffed peppers and I despise peppers, I’ll just pretend to make all the recipes, but give a review on all the recommended wines.

You've reminded me - I did a cgc game in 2016 that had a help assistant listing recipes: Vegetarian is Fun!

CGC 2016 is still not collated though, so there's no file or screenshots yet. That's a job for next year :-)

It looks like we have another cookbook!

Moja Gospodinjska Pomocnica (My housekeep in Slovenian).

The book comes with a tape of recipes apparently. Shame it's mia, a I don't have many 1980's Slovenian receipes in my repertoire.

And it's got the best cover ever! Looks like a MM/JSW inlay.

Don't worry.
Just doesn't make sense.
You are doomed already.
You were doomed since you created your account here.
You were doomed since you surfed to this URL.
You were doomed since the thought crossed your mind that the Spectrum could be more than recycling bin fuel.
DOOOOOMD!!!!!

Looks like it's here:
https://archive.org/details/zx_Kuhajmo_ ... Student_sl

R-Tape Could we add it to the database?

EDIT: And it's here:
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 96&id=9235
So a book somehow needs to be linked to the tape. And maybe the entry adjusted. I don't know if it's possible in ZXDB.
