But why would a toad be riding a Star Destroyer? Think, fellas

You don't know how much Disney have ruined the SW franchise...

Can't believe Xadom hasn't come up yet:

If you want a fine Q*Bert clone, there's Pi-Balled - but the loading screen was utterly pony:

The less said about Dinky Digger the better, and not just the loading screen...

These three can be explained in some way from being early in the Spectrum's life, before professional drawing packages had been produced. Colony was released in 1987, so where's the excuse here?

It’s the new Disney Star Wars character “Darth Toad”.

Bad clash, some square patterns in the air and front wheel twice as big as rear wheel:

Take a bad picture and rescale it to make it even worse:

It's by no means awful, just a bit lazy I think (given the quality of the game).

Always liked this loading screen and the game too!
Zombie Zombie was as I remember too similar to Ant Attack.

However, it had _phenomenal_ 3 channel music from the speccy beeper, I don't
think I ever heard any better.

Personally I liked the loading screen. Also, that disturbing message once the had loaded ...

Heh - that's quite a good one - paper 6, and use that new 'spray can' feature of your art program for about 2 minutes...

Just done a search for Gargoyle Games - the vast majority of their loading screens are pretty naff.

Hmm, I actually like those - Tir Na Nog, Dun Darach and Marsport all share the same layout, big name logo at the bottom and the top which pretty much evokes what the adventure which awaits you is about. This is particularly true about the latter two, the subject in the distance which invites you to explore it is a common technique used for this...

I'm okay with Tir Na Nog, and Dun Darach - I just think Marsport disappoints me because I feel I could have made it! (I probably couldn't, but you get the idea).

Here are another couple that I 'like'.

Imagine watching that for a few minutes while it loaded!

Loading screen should have been better than this by 1986:

Given that the author really wanted players experience the true horrors of the aftermath of a nuclear war, it seems quite fitting.

Oh, they're letters...? I thought they were balloons... :D

Another one, not badly rendered but a somewhat geriatric-looking player...

it is amazing how removing attributes turned it into amaterish nightmare drawing.

also, the hand is taken from Fist too, only rotated. it seems that i found a way to create my own loading screens...

An early Speccy game called Demon Chase.

..There's something about this one that I actually quite like.

Image

From the Sinclair User review:

"Demon Chase LOADs with a title page containing as many symbols of evil as could possibly be crowded onto a television screen"

(The skull reminded me of Murray, the demonic skull from Monkey Island)

I misjudged the room with my previous suggestion of Zombie Zombie, but what about this beauty?!

Image

(with apologies to Tony Barber)

I wonder how most of these screens were done. Melbourne Draw came out pretty early, but I guess most of these are graph paper or custom etch-a-sketch jobbies.
