New Friendlier Hyperlinks

Post by PeterJ »

We are in the process of adding new friendlier hyperlinks across the main site. The most important thing to point out is that old style links will continue to work, so nobody will get invalid or broken links.

So, the old links were like this:

https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 96&id=1551

The new style is like this:

https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/1 ... namite_Dan

Image included so you can see the full URL.

Why did we make this change?

The new links are nicer for social sharing, are more user-friendly and readable for everyone's convenience. So when someone bookmarks and shares a link, it should be more intuitive as to what it means.

Search Engine Optimisation - As well as the tags that are in the mark-up of the page, including the game title in the URL will help Google and other search engines find our site.

Please feel free to ask any questions, and please be rest assured that the old links will continue to work.

Yes!!!
And also, could be nice to have a proper URL when doing searches. Right now I can't copy/paste a search URL directly.

Thanks. We are looking at URLS for searches. The trouble is that there are so many options in advanced search, the URL becomes incredibly long.

I was just about to say that I generally like these new links, although I'm not sure it's necessary to include the machine type, given that it's almost always 'ZX-Spectrum'. Luckily it can be omitted, so it's not a big deal. (In fact you can put anything you like in the URL after the ID and it will still work.)

I can't guarantee that will always be the case djnzx48. There are an awful lots of ZX81 titles and of course the issue occurs when you have the same game title for both machines and you still want Google to differentiate, hence the solution. Having the machine name there should help the SEO.

and i guess we'll eventually have ZXNext titles too, so adding that info to URL is prolly a good idea.

There are still a lot of games that share the same name across a single platform (for example, there are nine games for the Spectrum called 'Invaders'). If anything, that seems more common than having two games of the same name on different platforms.
