128k Only Games
Hi,
I used to own a grey +2 in the 80s. I wished I would of kept it now knowing how much these things are selling for on ebay today! Anyway I'm looking at buying a Spectrum + 48k (The toast rack 128k versions are too expensive) and wondered if out of all the games for the Spectrum were there any that were just 128k only?
Also are these digital tape memory card things any good?
Thanks

Hi PootisSpencer,
Yes, there were quite a few 128K only games. For example:
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/5 ... tood_Still
Use the filters on the homepage to search for 128K Titles.
Yes, the SD Card devices are excellent. If you are only ever going to have a 48K Spectrum then have a look at this. It's a cheaper option the the DivMMC devices, has lots of great features, but only works with 48K titles.

Maybe also try out an emulator like Fuse. Whilst it's not the 'real' experience, it's very convenient and keeps the money in your bank account!

If you can somehow get a 128K machine I would recommend it. There are ways around it with the 48K machines (composite mod), but the 128K machines are much easier to connect to a modern TV for example. You also get improved sound. Finally many of the modern games are 128K.

Re: 128k Only Games
I would recommend getting a +2 Spectrum as they’re quite cheap and easy to connect to a modern TV and a DivMMC Future for SD card loading. While there are only a few games released for the 128k only - more at the end of the Spectrum’s lifespan - there are some great 128k enhanced releases - either standalone like Ghostbusters 128k or separate 128k versions like Chase HQ, plus some really good modern 128k enhanced hacks with added music like Barbarian.
Re: 128k Only Games
I think that in recent years, a lot of exclusive 128k games have been done, not just a few...
Is it possible to filter 128k games only on sc?
On the old wos advanced search page (which doesnt exist anymore) this was possible.

Hi Pegaz. You can filter for 128K, and by Genre.
Filtering for all games regardless of Genre is a good idea though.

At SC home page, select "Machine: ZX-Spectrum 128K", then click "Search ZXDB". You will get this:

How did you choose just all the games in the search?
In Advanced search / Genre, only different subgenres can be selected or I missed something?
Just checked, In the old wos advanced search, we could select "any games" in the "Type" section.
Can you add something like that here as well, eg. all games, all demos, all utils etc.

Re: 128k Only Games
Genre is just a string in SC search. Therefore you can use whatever you want, not just the options that the site form gives you
I think that's a good idea! Now we just need to convince PeterJ

Re: 128k Only Games
Thanks for all the replies. I know that getting the 128k or +2 is better but I have found locally a Spectrum + for £65 which I think is an OK deal. I'm not too fussed about playing the newer 128k games. All the games I had back in the 80s are 48k anyway such as Jetpac, Tranz Am, Fruit Machine Simulator and all the Dizzy Games. I also have an old crt TV which I'm thinking about using. Only thing I'm looking at now is the Maxduino. Anyone had experience with one of these or know of something better?
Re: 128k Only Games
Max/Tzx -Duinos are cool, but you could probably just try your smartphone first. There's an app called TeeZiX (and one other I think) which allows loading .tzx files straight from the phone. You can also load them from your PC/laptop, even .tap files via Winamp.
The most popular modern option is using one of DIV devices though - these allow insta-loading of .tap/sna/z80 files from SD card (often come with Kempston port too).

Re: 128k Only Games
Yea my phone doesn't have a headphone jack so can't use that. I would prefer to be able to load at real-time rather than fast loading. Nostalgia and all that...
EDIT: Didn't realise you could get a USB C to 3.5mm jack. So looking for the app now as it's not on the play store.

Re: 128k Only Games
Anyone help with TeeZiX? I have the app and load it up and it shows Google drive or to install a file manager. I click the Google drive icon and it takes me to it but when I click the .tap file it asks what to open it with and TeeZiX isn't an option. So I can't load them in TeeZiX.
Re: 128k Only Games
Can I suggest you try PlayZX on Android. It has all the titles included. Just choose what you want to play.

These applications are excellent but you do need the right cables and enough volume from your phone. The 3.5mm cable into the spectrum needs to be mono. Read this thread:
