The best classic Speccy game beginning with E: discussion

Post by PeteProdge »

Not that many games start with E. Here are the ones I've come up with as the contenders for the E vote, beginning around this time next week...
 • Earth Shaker by Michael Batty/Your Sinclair
 • Elite by Firebird
 • Emlyn Hughes International Soccer by Audiogenic
 • Enduro Racer by Activision
 • Enigma Force by Beyond
 • Equinox by Mikro-Gen
 • Eric & The Floaters by Sinclair Research
 • Exolon by Hewson
I can see Elite and Exolon dominating this poll. Probably Elite more than anything else, but I could be wrong. Name your nominees here!

Agree (I don't like Elite much, though).

My nominations:

Everyone's a Wally
Emilio Butragueño Futbol
Escape From the Planet of the Robot Monsters
Eskimo Eddie

Everyone's a Wally should be included, a great game in a great series. E. Butragueño Futbol and EFTPOTRM were decent conversions of great arcade games (in spite of E. Butragueño Futbol hasn't aged very well). And Eskimo Eddie is a nice game from the Ocean early years.

Enduro Racer was a good conversion.
And Hewson's Eliminator was pretty good.
E-Motion was interesting, but better on 16-bit machines.
Equinox was OK.
And are we counting Extreme (1991)?
In which case do Egghead and Egghead to the Rescue count to? What's the cutoff? I suppose they didn't get commercial releases, only via magazines.

Never played it, but noticed that it's got a good WoS score.

Yep. 1991 is fine. The ZX Spectrum games market was still a presence in shops. It's around 1993 that things really fade out.

Well, in a way, that is a commercial release. Magazine covertapes certainly count, hence the inclusion of Earth Shaker here and Blind Panic in the B poll.

The only game I think I ever played beginning with E on the Speccy was Eddie Kidd's Jump Challenge, so, um, move along, nothing to see here.

If we're aiming for the worst, I can easily top that...

A bit offtopic, I noticed that you are listing here things that begin with "el" in Spanish like "El Cid" or "El Hobbit".

This is a different philosophy than used in WOS. Things like a, the, el, la, der, die in different languages were ignored as part of the title.

So for example "The Happiest Days of Your Life" belonged to H not T.

Are you changing this rule here?

Hi Ralf at the moment this is how it will work. I will look in ZXDB to see if titles are stored in any other way and change it if I can.

We could also possibly use string manipulation but no promises.

You just need to use "library_title" instead of title. Kinda like this:

Code: Select all

SELECT id, title FROM entries
WHERE UPPER(library_title) LIKE 'E%'
ORDER BY UPPER(library_title)

Enduro Racer was the first racer I saw that moved the horizon to indicate vertical movement - I can still feel the excitement / anxiety when going over that first hill. Wow!

Yes, Enduro Racer is very good. At the almost equal level with Chase HQ, I would say.

Any love for 'Edd the Duck'!
It's a decent game. A bit like a poorer cousin of Rainbow Islands but definitely on the good side.

If we're discounting 'the' from titles then I'd like to suggest "The Eidolon", which I spent many a happy hour playing back in the day.

Otherwise I'll wait for 'T'. :)

Hi Blerkotron , Eidolon now correctly appears in the 'E' list, so go for it.

Great game.

I like how each letter raises names of games we maybe didn't know, or have never tried. And on recommendation we might try some of these. I hope people will try this one, its really good. Well i liked it so there.... :)
I don't have anything cool to put here, so i'll just be off now to see a priest with yeast stuck between his teeth and his friend called Keith who's a hairpiece thief...

We are indeed discounting 'stop words' like A, The, El, etc, which means The Eidolon definitely counts in this.

PeteProdge The link to the list I posted yesterday should now be accurate (It includes the year so you can tell if it's 'classic' or not. Please let me know if not. I'm keen to iron out issues before I start on the full A-Z.
