List of games that have separate 48K and 128K versions ?

Post by saucysarah »

Is there somewhere or someway to find a list of games that have a separate 48K and 128K version ? I've been sorting out the filenames of my old collection and remember that I only downloaded the 128K versions (many years ago). I would also like the 48K versions but don't know which have both. I tried using the 'Pokemaster' tool to rename my files but not sure if it's accurate. For instance, it found in my collection All Hallows - Rise of the Pumpkin and labelled it as 48K but if you load it in 128K you get music, so should it be labelled 48-128K ?.

Also, on this site when it says Machine Type : ZX-Spectrum 48K/128K, does that mean there are separate 48K and 128K versions or the same tape has 128K enhancements ?

In my opinion, if it works in a 48K device, it is a 48K game. Having AY music for those that have a 128K machine is just an extra. So maybe they should be labeled as... 48K+?

Thanks for the list. 30 games, is that all there are that have a seperate 48K & 128K version ? Seems a very small amount. Maybe these are only the 128K only releases ? I'm sure there are a lot more that had a 48K version on one side of the cassette and 128K on the other side.

Not too long ago, I think Alessandro made a big list with 48/128 versions, but I can't find it now, but I'll still try.

I don't think that lists includes text adventures.

I know of several that had distinct 48K and (longer) 128K versions, such as some of the FSF games like Magnetic Moon and The Axe of Kolt.

Oh, and there's Microfair Madness. But I wouldn't recommend that. ;)

Mmm... I remember that Short Circuit had a 48K version (divided in two independent parts, each one could be loaded and played independently) and a 128K version with both parts in a single load.

The 30 games listed there were unique 128k only releases, for example Barry McGuigan's Boxing got a separate 128k only release. Some of those games it was down to the original 48k version not working on the original toast rack, others were enhanced releases.

However, there are loads more 128k versions, Ocean had most of their games from 1988 onwards which had 128k versions on the second side. Sometimes games, like Renegade and Auf Wiedersehen Monty, had hidden bits of code that only loaded on the 128k, so you got music and other things when loaded on a 128k machine. Then there were later 128k only releases like Darkman and there's later enhanced 128k releases of 48K games, like Barbarian, so yeah there's a lot more than 30 128k games!
