Say something negative about a game universally regarded as excellent

Post by PeteProdge »

Why, yes, it is the opposite of that thread. I'm so original.

Here's where you can take aim at some sacred cows.

Skool Daze
Look, making shields flash really doesn't make sense whatsoever.

Rainbow Islands
That rendition of Somewhere Over The Rainbow is slightly off key.

Chaos
At the end of the day, it's a bit of a roll of the dice. If, at the start, you've got no undead creatures, and have loads of King Cobras and Fauns, you may as well be John Inman taking on Tyson Fury.

Emlyn Hughes International Soccer
You can't have M or SPACE as the action button.
Reheated Pixels - a combination of retrogaming, comedy and factual musing, is here!

Chaos

You can pick the Spectrum wizard skill level (1-8). But at the lowest skill level (1) they're still equal to you in strength.
Standard/default difficulty should be 3 or 4. This lets you play against wizards that are (likely to be) weaker than you, to help learn the game. Like an 'easy' difficulty.

Jetpac

Platforms are always in the same position. Would be nice to randomize or vary them.

Wanted: Monty Mole

Crusher timings are randomized. Would be nice if they had some regularity
(oh, and the takes-forever death tune is annoying)

Myth - too easy, rubbish controls

Rainbow Islands - the bosses ruin it

Combat School - last two levels are dreadful and utterly kill the game

BMX Simulator - is rubbish

3D Ant Attack - those keys though

Target: Renegade - game-ruiningly easy

Some Raffaele Cecco

Exolon - Random plunger things - see Monty Mole

Cybernoid and Cybernoid II - pixel perfect pipe sections ruin it for me

Stormlord and Stormlord II - fast-moving, respawning enemies don't fit well in a platform game.

Turbo Esprit - the actual game objectives were bobbins - a Carmageddon-style mod would improve it no end.

Wheelie - flickered more than an SG1000 game.

Deathchase - the perspective is all wrong.

Barbarian - the fricking roll move FFS!

"Es liebt die Welt, das Strahlende zu schwärzen,
und das Erhabene in den Staub zu ziehen." (Friedrich Schiller)

Quick translation (by me):

The world loves to blacken the bright,
and to drag down the sublime into the dirt.

Also, hyper dull and the random spawning enemies ruin it a bit.

Too bast@rd double hard.

(yes I know that could be every Speccy game except Bruce Lee and Saboteur on easy level, but I really can't get on with it)

The Great Escape - controls are at 90 degrees to most other isometric games.

Where Time Stood Still - ditto

Atic Atac - almost all of the items are pointless. Also, I never completed it as a kid despite scoring 98%, because one of the key pieces looks more like a tankard.

I have to agree on Uridium as well. Too damn hard.

Test Drive 2 - Speedometer just displays digital number. Even Chequered Flag had a realistic speedometer with pointer.

There's a lot of sacred cows I don't like at all. Here goes

Arkanoid - Revenge of Doh My eyes!

Manic Miner Dull gameplay. Horrible music.

Knight Lore Waiting for the transformation animation to finish is really annoying.

Lunar Jetman Tedious.

Match Day Too slow. Sprites are taken from Bear Bovver.

Rastan My eyes!

Tir Na Nog Boring random wandering.

Technician Ted Too hard. No fun at all.

You know, call me a philistine but I'm not even going to name any titles as there are too many, but these days I find a lot of Speccy games, even highly revered ones, have a very bad framerate. I did put up with that as a kid but these days when I try them again on an emulator I often find them unbearably sluggish and feel that running them at double speed is what they should have ran at in first place. Games like JSW/MM are good examples, and those aren't even scrolling.

And most of pictures are too simple and annoyingly slow. But that's why a new 128K version will appear one day and the problems will be over. ;)
