I'dd add something common in some good isometric games like HoH or Phantom Club: a 'monotone' map where most screens look similar and where it's easy to lose your way.

Hence I prefer games like Knight Lore or Alien 8.

Where Time Stood Still - that bloody swamp with the tentacled creatures, I always lost any two of Dirk, Gloria or Clive in there.

Fighter Pilot (1) - Real F-15 has a single gun placed on wing root, not dual guns.
Fighter Pilot (2) - Invisible mountains.

Atic Atac - Aimlessly walking from room to room is really quite boring. I never what all the fuss was about.

1 - R-Type - failure to explore diplomatic avenues with the Bydo

2 - Ikari warriors - the instructions don't say how to pronounce it, even though we all know it's 'ik-ar-ee'

This applies to a lot of games: Firelord, Sabre Wulf, Robin of the Wood, Dun Durach. What's it all about?

Yep, I never really enjoyed any of those games either. I suppose Firelord was slightly better with it's little game when you entered a building, but even so it was all about wandering about looking for stuff. Yawnsville

I think Atic Atac is the exception. Despite it being on multiple floors - or perhaps it's because each floor feels a bit different - I learned the map quite quickly. I found after about 3 goes I could find my way around the house with just a mental map.

Sabre Wulf I'd say less so, though I found the mountains give you an idea of where you are.

Robin of the Wood is a complete bast, everything looking very similar and a wrap-around map - aaargh..!

Firelord is just a tad too big IMO. I think Starquake is the same size but somehow I found the teleports a bit easier to figure out.

But I think is the good point of this game: you're in a dense forest and everything looks similar, so it's easy to get lost.

It's not just the size of the map but how convoluted it is.

In Atic Atac, the only thing that'll stop you from leaving a location by a particular exit is if the door is locked. There are only a few keys and finding most of them isn't that hard.

Sabre Wulf, on the other hand, often requires a lengthy detour via several other screens just to get to a place that you can already see on your current screen. Even though the map isn't that much bigger, and there are no locked exits, it's a much harder game to traverse on account of that.

Cobra - I've tried to get into it but it seems to be absolutely terrible.

Academy - All I want to do is add a few mores flares to my vehicle, and take some missiles away to compensate, but I've got to go through the entire UI redesign each time.

That and the fact that the game is rubbish.
