Yeah! Top game for 1983, IMHO. I spent hours on that.

What throws the first pic off is that a good chunk that appears to be part of the sprite is actually colour clash with the bricks!

Yep.

I was going to either go with the sword on the wall (possibly too obscure) or the axes (too easy) so went with the enemy sprite.
