What game has appeared on the most platforms?

Anything relating to non Sinclair computers from the 1980's, 90's or even before.

What game has appeared on the most platforms?

Post by PeteProdge »

This is something I was asked by my brother, and it's rather 'un-Google-able', if you know what I mean.

The answer could well be one of these:
Pong
Space Invaders
Pac Man
Tetris

...and then again, it could be none of these!

I'm not sure how to work it out, frankly!

The Guinness World Records say it's Tetris, if you mean official platform ports, or Doom, for unofficial ones:

However, if you count clones (e.g. Earth Shaker counts as Boulder Dash) then the story might be different. Very subjective.

Surely the game that's appeared on most platforms is Southern Belle.

I'll get my coat.

I would suggest Star Trek. Text based versions go back to 70s and earlier. I think most systems had a version.

Well, surely that's more of a license than an actual specific game?

Tetris is the obvious answer.

Other games that seemed to be everywhere were

Micro Machines
Lemmings
Sensible Soccer

I think he's referring to the old Battleships-style "Star Trek" game (never officially licensed) where you go around a grid hunting down Klingons. Even Cassette 50 has a buggy version.

Oh yeah, Lemmings got a ton of ports, even the Sam Coupé. Pipe Mania seemed to be everywhere too.

I hereby retract my whinge about Star Trek!

Oh, for Sensible Soccer to be on the Spectrum...

Apart from Tetris and Lemmings I also thought of Robocop and SFII.

Most pre-78 mainframes and university systems - a lot of which hosted Star Trek, Chess and Colossal Cave

Does "Hello World" count as a game?

I'd imagine tic tac toe (noughts and crosses) has been written for pretty much everything

If you were to stay strictly on-topic and say "which ZX Spectrum game was released for the most platforms by the same publisher" then the answer is Joe Blade and Joe Blade II which were both released for 10 different platforms: Spectrum, C64, Amstrad, BBC, Electron, Atari 8 Bit, Atari ST, Amiga, MSX and DOS.
