New RSS Reader Extension

Post by PeterJ »

I have installed Smartfeed which is a fully customisable RSS Reader. Each user can set which forums they want feeds from, setup frequency and so much more.

I can't offer support on this, but please let me know how you get on. I have done some basic tests and it seems to be working.

There is guidance here:

https://www.phpbbservices.com/my-software/smartfeed_wp/

If you currently subscribe to loads of threads via email, please can you try switching to this instead. Thank you.

To use it, start by clicking the 'Smartfeed' icon on the top menu bar.

Feedback please!

I guess a RSS feed could be displayed on real hardware because it's much simpler than HTML.
There's a spectrum Twitter client, so.... I say keep it active :D

Thanks PeterJ,

I would really like to use Smartfeed, but I was unable to get it to work. I use Feedbin to manage my feeds, but it was “unable to subscribe”.

Could it be that the recent changes to protect the forum from bots/malicious users is blocking Feedbin as well? Presumably other third-party/online aggregators like Feedly might be affected too?

Edit: Feedbin requests always come from *.bot.feedbin.com – is it possible to add that to an allowlist or something like that? Of course, don’t go to any special effort if it’s just for me! (ironically I’ve subbed to this topic via email for now!)

Hi flatduckrecords,

I have added the feedbin user agent to the safe list and it now works for me with RSS2 format.

Please can you give it a go?

Bug report:
 • go to smartfeed;
 • select «first post of topic only» from Types of posts in feed;
 • click «generate feed».
↑ you will get a SQL error.

Many thanks for the report. I will log the report on the Smartfeed website, as its just an extension that we use.

Could I ask a favour? Please use the mention system which is '@' then start typing the username. I then get an alert. I don't read all posts, and only found this by chance.

Thanks again for reporting.

Hi PeterJ ,

Just noticed this - that's a really nice feature! I'd like to use Feedly to follow the forums, but it's seemingly not working.

May it be that Feedly is blocked as well, as flatduckrecords suggested?

Thanks for your brilliant work!

It may be worth point out (note: I've not been and examined the feeder php code myself yet) but given how it seems to work , it may be necessary to remain logged into the site. Not tested.

This is just a thought if you logout of here the feeder may not work if you're using to "pipe" into something else etc.

Hello spider:

Nope, I'm logged into this site. I've just checked it again just in case and tried once more, with no luck.

Thanks anyway!

Hi jpablo,

I need to update the extension for another user and will also look at your user agent issue.

From what I see of a very (and I mean < 60 seconds glance) of the code itself, it might have issues if you're using a very dynamic IP too, I don't mean one that changes every day or so, I mean something that will change every few minutes or an hour etc.

Anyway I'm getting off topic here, admins will be able to sort no doubt for you. :) I was just curious how it worked due to there not being an import (long story) and me bodging one together a few years ago for someone else, as I say that's off topic though.

Hi there!

Is there any foreseeable plan to install any other plugin that generates RSS feeds?

Call me oldie, but I loved this feature and miss it quite much...

Cheers
