40 Years already! Still going strong! To the next 40 years. :)

(Also an excuse to join this forum. Haven't do much lately Speccy-wise, but perhaps I will have more time one day.)

Code: Select all

IF Month=4 AND Day=23 AND Year=2022 THEN PRINT "Happy 40th Birthday"
Thought about a bit of assembly but decided that line of Basic is good enough and easy to read!

And two years and counting until the 40th anniversary of your very own Microbot! (which I'll fire up on my rubber keys this weekend - thank goodness it's always been a reliable loader!)

Great collection! And a humble cake to match the everyman's computer (though jet black would be better than breadbin brown).

40 years, eh? What a step-up from the Ingersoll Battle Command the Spectrum was.

I've been Covid-isolating today, so getting a bit of time to play through a few classics, and even do little speccy coding. I still can't figure out music. One day.

So - big thanks to the jolly little rubber fellow, and also to everyone still making games and posts and quizzes and magazines and podcasts and all the rest. Keep it up, Spec-chums!

Great to see you Timmy. You reminded me that I had your Flappy bird on cassette and I had to fire it up on my +2 (I've had a big dinner and too much wine for Forest Raider Cherry :D ). Only managed a piffling 24.

Hope you find the time and inspiration to release some more Speccy stuff (and I hope I do too).

Happy birthday Speccy..!

Am planning to get the machine itself out tomorrow, but in the meantime I've been regressing in emulation...

And true to my word, I did get right the way round Jetpac earlier. Even those bouncy aliens that track where I am couldn't stop me.

Of course, in 1982 we all thought we'd have our own personal means of levitation by about 2000 or so. Where is it, then?

I was having a thought yesterday about doing a "Through The Wall" highscore challenge , either with just one life/ball or the normal game.

Aye shame. We'll have to wait 10 more years. Eek.

Does anyone have the original image of this as a .tap or .scr? And do we know who did it?

40 years old, eh? In some ways I feel old but I'm still enjoyably playing ZX Spectrum games this many years on. I've even programmed a small one via assembler and a half done one in BASIC (which I do intend to finish....someday). I'm eagerly, yet patiently, awaiting the 2nd run Next machine - I'll probably do an unboxing stream when that turns up. In fact stream wise I did do a whopping 6 hour stream yesterday to celebrate the old black boxed wonder (https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1464647437) with games such as:
Who Dares Wins II
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Tour De Force
Shinobi
Moon Cresta
Rogue Trooper
and, of course, Manic Miner

So here's to you Mr ZX Spectrum! You still are a quirky machine that is much loved by all. We'll see you again for your grand 50th! :D

I could be wrong but I think the only issue with "Thro'" is you end up with this (probably a common issue with BASIC breakout games at the time):

Image

At this point I think you need to lose a life, in order to randomise the ball position and shift it off its diagonal track. Then you can get the last two bricks. The game is pretty easy otherwise, you could probably keep playing it forever as the ball doesn't speed up or anything.

Interesting choice not to have a HUD, the player has both a score and lives, but they're not printed on screen anywhere.

I did add those to a custom version I did once, showing the balls remaining and the current score along with a crude demo mode with a bit of randomness in it. Sadly long lost!

Although incorrect on the year (this is the 1985 one) here is a pic of an appropriate page of the Argos catalogue from then:
