The gatekeeper for a huge chunk of modern gaming has paid tribute...

In that parallel universe where Sir Clive Sinclair never existed, the gaming industry would be VERY different with a lot of European working class kids shut out of it. Just by watching Bedrooms To Billions, you get a sense of how important it was to have AFFORDABLE home computing to bring about a quirky UK gaming culture in the early 1980s.

The fact it was cheap enough for the average working class to take a punt on, combined with BASIC that actually worked, with all the keywords printed on the keys, like cards or stamps to be collected - means the Speccy made programming a computer a reality for millions of people (and children) who would otherwise be excluded.

Rip Clive. I'm sure you were carried aloft by a host of valkyries with massive babs and IQs of at least 160.

This chart from December 1983 speaks for itself.

Well played, Playstation, well played. Nice to know that even outside our geeky little club here that the heavyweights acknowledge one of the true pioneers.

I was thinking last night where Uncle Clive stands in the ranking of home computing greats. You know: Bill Gates, Nolan Bushnell, Ted Dabny, Ken Kutargi, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, Hiroshi Yamauchi etc.

He has to be right up there with them, surely?

Since Uncle Clive was a well-known atheist, I doubt he would have wanted priests at his funeral ;)

You are allowed female clergy these days. He might not have minded then.

But it is annoying that all the obituaries outside of the technology press are concentrating on the C5 rather then his computers and electronics.

In the UK maybe it is so, but I can assure you that here he is being remembered as the inventor of the ZX Spectrum and a pioneer of hi-tech and home computing :)

Satya Nadella's Twitter post is a huge surprise. Didn't expect an American, or a CEO of Microsoft for that matter, to have started out with a Sinclair machine.

Edit: Ah, he was born and raised in India. That would explain it!

If you have access to BBC Sounds there is a nice tribute to Sir Clive on the Jeremy Vine show on BBC Radio 2 last Friday. It starts about 40 minutes in.

I actually got an email from the production team asking if i would contribute. I had my phone off all day as it was my Niece's wedding and only saw it too late.

I'm a bit late posting, but I still wanted to say thank you Sir Clive for helping to make the early 80s an exciting time for computers and computing. Without your affordable computers I never would've developed an interest in computing. (Yes other devices were available at the time, but they were just too expensive).
Also because Spectrums were so common it was easy to make new friends and share ideas/tips/cheats, plus software was always available ;)

Rest in peace.

There is no doubt Sir Clive had a big impact on the computer industry in the UK. A good many people working in games/IT now owe it to the ZX Spectrum.

But globally the C64 had more of an impact.

Agree or disagree, it is just one of those things that doesn't need debating on a Speccy forum, least of all on this post.
