Unable to load games

I got my ZX up and running, but I am unable to load games.
Is there a specific audio input required?
I tried plugging the ZX into the earphone socket of my laptop and played a wav file of a game but the specturm doesnt pick it up.
I tested the output of the laptop and I have checked continuity from 1 end of the lead right onto the PCB and all seems to be good.
Any suggestions?
ZX has the load screen - blank box with changing colours outside it just waiting for the sound.

Yep thanks, I was too quick to ask for help. Cranked it up full and got those lines I spent so much time as a kid watching..
