The 15 best dust covers for retro computers, you won't believe number 6

Post by Jbizzel »

Now I have you attention with that thirst trap, click bait of a title, you might be thinking my intention is to have a pop at the so called 'retro' YouTube scene, but you'd be dead wrong.

Although that is a worthy topic all of its own, inexplicably it is not the theme of this thread, I simply thought of that title earlier on and thought it was too good not to use.

My actual question is this:

You can have one of each genres of game for the spectrum, and you have to put together your ultimate mix tape. Only 1 from each genre, that really shows off the spectrum to the kid next door with a c64. But also, games you really like, a desert island mix tape,.if you will.

Shmup
Car racer
Adventure
Beat em up
Puzzle
Platformer
Strategy
Simulation

Here's mine

Shmup - r-type
Car racer - chase HQ
Adventure - fantasy word Dizzy
Beat em up - robo cop
Puzzle - pipemania
Platformer - manic miner
Strategy - laser squad
Simulation - trash man

What do you this, have I nailed it? What would you change?

Ps, if you have any recommendations for retro dust covers, DM me in secret.

@catmeows SimCity is superb on the spectrum!!

I love bomb jack but it's hard as nails. I play the CPC version, only because it is slow enough for me!

Shmup - R-Type. Yup.
Car racer - Rally Driver, because they have probably never played a racing game like it before!
Adventure - Balachor's Revenge. It's a great adventure, completable, and has 'Spectrum' written all over it.
Beat em up - Renegade.
Puzzle - Complica DX, though there's loads to choose from in this genre.
Platformer - Manic Miner. Obvs.
Strategy - Telly Heroes. It's fun, but even more fun to not play it properly.
Simulation - ALS can only amuse for so long, so my proper choice would have to be Amusement Park. It seems more like a management game, but it's listed as a a sim.

Extras that don't fit into the genres above:

Arcade - Buzzsaw!
Text Adventure - Mirror Mirror. Ignore the CGC deception, it's a devilishly clever idea and once you 'get' it, is fair and completable.
Ps, if you have any recommendations for retro dust covers, DM me in secret.

Shmup: Commando. Astonishing that it's coded for the Speccy by the guy who did Chuckie Egg.
Car racer: WEC Le Mans. Seems to be the fastest.
Adventure: Behind Closed Doors. Genuinely funny and a creative use of a single location setting.
Beat em up: Target Renegade. Everything that Double Dragon should have been.
Puzzle: Tetris. An obvious choice, but when it's this good, why pick anything else?
Platformer: Bubble Bobble. Simplicity and joy.
Strategy: Chaos. The best game on any platform of all time. IDST.
Simulation: I'd say ATV Simulator, but it's not really a simulator, many of the Codies' 'simulators' were misnomers. Oh, alright, Southern Belle, I know that route!

Very kind sir, though I need to inform you that I'm running out of fivers and I'm likely to miss the Xmas post this year...

Shmup - Elite, JetPac, or Zynaps (in that order, depending on what I'm allowed to count as a shmup)
Car racer - Turbo Esprit
Adventure - The Hobbit, assuming this is text adventures. Fave adventure is Lords of Time, but the Hobbit has more randomness and so more re-playability
Beat em up - IK+, just edges out Target Renegade
Puzzle - not sure about this one, maybe Deflektor? Or El Stompo so I can get my fiver back from R-Tape
Platformer - Manic Miner, obv
Strategy - Chaos, obv
Simulation - Formula One
