1) Manic Miner. I know JSW does more and breaks you out of the linear gameplay of MM, but the OG has more exciting game play and interesting screen design.
2) Jet Set Willy.
3) Styx.

1 - Manic Miner

3 - Styx
(50 - Andre's Night Off)
It pains me to say that MM comes top of the tree more for practical reasons than personality: MM is completable by anyone that applies themselves; JSW needs a fix for the attic bug, and even then is too big and difficult for most. So if JSW didn't fail on those, its edgier feel would just have nudged it to the top. Of course having said that, much of the JSW humour stands on MM's shoulders.
It's also a reminder for me to play Styx again. I don't think I'll revisit Andre's Night Off though... perhaps now is the time for a reboot?

I don't have anything cool to put here, so i'll just be off now to see a priest with yeast stuck between his teeth and his friend called Keith who's a hairpiece thief...

Suffice it to say that there's a very big gap between 2 and 3. One's a game you can spend many hours with, looking for its hidden secrets, while the other is more like thirty seconds and you're done.

Re: Devfinitive Edition (Matthew Smith): vote
Did Mathew Smith actually write Andre’s Night Off? Or was it made out he did to improve magazine sales? It’s extremely poor, even for a basic game and wouldn’t have thought submitting this to a magazine would have been a wise move considering the quality of his other titles.

I never "got" Manic Miner, I always found it a bit boring. I know, blasphemy right? I much prefered exploring the mansion in JSW than trying to collect all the objects on each screen. I know you were supposed to collect things in JSW, but I never bothered.

3 Andre's Night Off (not in support of that, but as an earnest protest against JSW)

Re: Devfinitive Edition (Matthew Smith): vote
Why is everyone giving a reply with three out of the four games listed in the order of preference? The original questionnaire says that "You may select 1 option".
If it's just one option, my vote is "Jet Set Willy".
If it's about indicating the order of preference among these four games (without necessarily mentioning them all), my vote is:
1. "Jet Set Willy"
2. "Manic Miner"
I don't care about the other two games; the fact that Matthew Smith wrote them makes them a historical curiosity and nothing more.

You must be new to these polls.jetsetdanny wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2023 10:52 pm Why is everyone giving a reply with three out of the four games listed in the order of preference? The original questionnaire says that "You may select 1 option".
Yes, you can vote for just one option in the forum-driven poll, that's the main poll.
But, we also have a 'top three' poll running in the comments whenever there are three or more options. Taking part in it is not compulsory and indeed, not every forum voter takes part.
Three points will be awarded to your first choice.
Two points to your second choice.
One point to your first choice.
If the forum poll results in a tie, then we defer to this 'proportional' poll. It's not a perfect way of doing things, but it just about works for us.

Thank you so much for this clear explanation!
In view of it, I have just voted "properly" in the main poll (and was a little surprised to see the results so far... ).

Re: Devfinitive Edition (Matthew Smith): vote
I think I prefer JSW over MM. I never got anywhere near beating it but when I played it, I'd just go off in one direction and just explore. It felt like such a massive game at the time. The good thing though is that even if certain rooms were impossible for you, you could just leave or avoid them. If you get stuck on MM, that's you done.

Re: Devfinitive Edition (Matthew Smith): vote
Jet Set Willy has to come top really, it just has more staying power overall despite the quirky bugs (although I'll freely admit to think JSW2 is better overall).
Manic Miner comes in a very close second, fun but once you beat it there's not a lot of reason to go back.
As for third, Styx I guess, but honestly that's well into scraping the barrel territory.
