Trying to recall an arcade game…

Post by 5MinuteRetro »

There are probably more relevant forums on which to ask this but I’m not a member of any of those…

So, today I walked past a cafe that, back in about 1985, was home to a solitary arcade game that swallowed many of the 10p pieces meant for my bus ride to and from school (I generally walked, so I could instead spend the money on arcade games and chips). I’d forgotten all about this arcade game until today — but I have no idea what the title was.

It was a motocross-style game that was a kinda top-down Enduro Racer, but I’m not sure there was any actual racing — perhaps just a time trial. All I really remember is top-to-bottom scrolling of a straight dirt track that was riddled with potholes, puddles, mud and what have you. Hitting a pothole, puddle or mud would slow you down. It was plenty colourful, though I mainly remember the brown of the track and perhaps greenery down the sides.

I’ve Googled, obviously, but so far can’t find the one I mean. I’m pretty sure I’ll know it when I see a screenshot.

Any ideas?!

I found Rally Bike, which looks kinda similar to what I remember but this is 1988, so definitely not it. It’s also way faster than the game I’m trying to recall…

Is this it?

In 1988 there was what looks like it might possibly cause someone to allege has the possibly interpretable appearance of something perhaps mistakenly similar to an unauthorised Spectrum version:

Thanks, but sadly not. Again, similar — but there were no pseudo 3D bits in the game I’m trying to recall.

Thanks, but no. It's the right year (1984... 85/86 at the *very latest*) but the game I'm trying to recall was purely top-to-bottom scrolling. I recall the mud being quite the obstacle, and it could properly slow you down. The game felt like a challenging 'slog', rather than a breathless race.

Aesthetically, I remember it being very similaer to the running part of the iron-man section in Combat School:
