In game beeper music

Post by Czarnikjak »

Does anyone have a list of games with in-gameplay beeper music? (Not menu music).
I only came accross very few (Manic Miner, JSW, BearBovver,Nosferatu), would like to checkout others.

Hi! I'm pretty sure I saw a similar thread in the past (can't find it), but a list was never produced, so, I can start a new one here and see how many we can find. I don't think there are that many:

Didn't the original Booty have music? I know the remake did.

Yes! Brian Bloodaxe and Booty both 48k ingame music. Added to the list.
Also, other titles by John F Cain like Marble Madness.

I've searched through my list of played games and I mad up this one:

Fantastic Voyage, Turmoil, Gotcha, World Cup Football, Kung-Fu, Perils of Bear George, The Chinese Juggler, BC Bill, Mutant Monty, The House Jack Built, Boiler House, Big Ben Strikes Again, Atlantis, Circus, Ramon Rodriguez, Balaclava, Mountain Stream, Apaches, Microdoc, Tempi Moderni (this one is eligible also for "game that uses FLASH")

A few need some verification though.

Steelyard Blue, I think, had music. And as a Harry S Price, the original probably had a different tune too.

Tapper had a ‘tune’.

The Dynamite Dans had many tunes but none looped. Controversial?

Didn’t Jasper have a tune?

I was thinking the same, because when anyone mentions in game music, I always think in Manic Miner and Dynamite Dan. I think that qualifies.

Jet Set Gertie (which is oddly not a JSW mod)

I remember finding a way to get the interrupt-driven music loaded up and running in Basic.

I forgot the name of the game and the author, but it was 100% Sinclair Basic and had in-game music. :) Might have been one of those I-can’t-believe-it’s-not-machine-code games we’ve seen in the past few years.

I have released two games with In-Game Beeper Musisc, programed in pure BASIC:

Tetris4px
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/3 ... /Tetris4px

and Lprint Runaway
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/4 ... nt_Runaway

In both it plays one beep note every 25 frames...

The thing is.... I hardly called them music, hahaha

Right now there are only 9 titles in the database with music confirmed to be authored with Wham!

I hope we can take this opportunity to expand that list.

I was kind of toying with the idea, but it is hard to confirm just by ear, and specially the in-game ones that AFAIK are using an interruption hack to achieve that.
But I'm going to note them if I can, and perhaps we can later do a binary search like the ones we performed on the MCoder list.

Well, that's unexpected.
I've played a bootleg version La miniera abbandonata that had some weird rumbles that the child me understood as "mine sounds". It was broken soundtrack instead.

(a similar issue happened to Panzadrome, in that case the sound broke the game)

Similar things happened to me in Argentina, not only broken pirated games, but also games with missing effects and sounds because I was playing them in a Timex computer.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the platform game, not the minigames on the other side) features a beepy rendition of the William Tell Overture.
