Forum e-mail alerts corrupted?

Post by equinox »

Does anyone else have the recurring problem where e-mail alerts from this phpBB forum arrive corrupted? It's like part of the message is missing, which damages the headers and wrecks the subject line, etc.
For example, I just got a mail with this in the subject line:

=?US-ASCII?Q?Reply in "How big should new Speccy games be? 48k? Bigge?= =?US-ASCII?Q?r? Release 2 versio=

Message source follows:

Which mail client are you using?

If I am reading https://github.com/PHPMailer/PHPMailer/issues/1949 correctly, your mail client should be handling this encoding automatically.

Thunderbird 115.7.0.
However, my client seems irrelevant, since you can see from the the mail headers (which are written before the mail reaches my client) that the message was corrupted.

AFAIK it is your mail client's job to decode the mail headers correctly, this issue https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=673092 has still not been solved.

Nope, it also looks like the same corrupted garbage if I view it in DreamHost's browser webmail, which I suppose has nothing to do with Thunderbird.

@equinox,

I've seen this very occasionally in Outlook webmail (maybe 1 in 100 messages), but not consistently. I'm a couple of upgrades behind on phpBB so maybe that will fix it. Busy with other projects at the moment, but will get to that when I can. I will also check the email settings on the phpBB control panel.

These sorts of issues are notoriously hard to find when it's not consistently happening.

I think the RFC2047 encoding only kicks in when the subject is "too" long 'How big should new Speccy games be? 48k? Bigger? Release 2 versions?' is longer than 60 which seems to be the setting for too long in phpBBmailer.
