A request for new tags

A request for new tags
Please add 2 tags for bosses.
- first one for the final boss, e.g. Draconus
- and another for level bosses, e.g. Silkworm; this tag is also for games that have several bosses but have no separate levels
Some games can have both tags, e.g. Switchblade

Re: A request for new tags
Maybe best if we populate the groups first, then Einar can decide?
Some multiple level boss games: Rainbow Islands, Dragon Ninja, New Zealand Story, R-Type, X-Out.
I'm struggling for just one final boss games...

DNA warrior
Bruce Lee
Switchblade - 4 mini bosses and the final boss
I just don't know how to do that if you are speaking about voting and dicussions frame.
Re: A request for new tags
I mean let's all list some more here in this thread, and then Einar can decide whether to create the tag.

Re: A request for new tags
I think the tag itself is a great idea. However we still need to sort out the details.
For instance, Castlevania has many bosses but it's a continuous game. Therefore they are neither end-level bosses or end-game bosses. Also if there are too few games in this list, we should probably have a single tag for them all.

Re: A request for new tags
It is the second case - several bosses inside a game without levels.Einar Saukas wrote: ↑Sat Mar 02, 2024 6:50 pm For instance, Castlevania has many bosses but it's a continuous game. Therefore they are neither end-level bosses or end-game bosses.
But well, we already have tags for filmation and filmation-2 engines that group 2/3 titles only. Though it seems to be not many games that have end game boss.Einar Saukas wrote: ↑Sat Mar 02, 2024 6:50 pm Also if there are too few games in this list, we should probably have a single tag for them all.

Re: A request for new tags
Features are a very different situation from series and sets.
It doesn't make sense to say "there are not many games created with Filmation II engine so let's combine them with something else"
Re: A request for new tags
Interesting idea with "boss" tag.
Personally I would just add one global "game boss" tags and didn't go into details.
However if you want to go into details then you will have:
- endgame bosses (like Draconus)
- end level bosses (Renegade)
- middle game bosses (Castlevania, game not split into levels)
- middle level bosses (Turrican)
- so called "boss rush", a situation where there are several bosses directly one after another (Dragon Ninja)
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/boss_rush
There is an article in Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boss_(video_games) which describes different kinds of bosses
and uses vocabulary like "miniboss" or "superboss" but I'm not convinced if it's standard way of describing things.

Re: A request for new tags
Another gray area is: should we give Renegade a "end-level boss" tag too? It depends if we consider the last boss in Renegade as yet another end-level boss, or an end-game boss in a separate category from the others.
A single tag for bosses would be much easier...

Re: A request for new tags
Easier and IMO more useful. Personally I'd want to see all bosses more often than subdivisions. Any further detail could be filtered through other parameters like genre.

Very small groups are impractical becasuse of:Ralf wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2024 10:51 am However if you want to go into details then you will have:

- there probably will be not so many games that we have to include in some groups
- holywars about methods of group segregation
My idea with division is simple - either single boss or many bosses. Single boss is obviously met at the end of game. So all cases above with green color are the case of many bosses.
All Renegade bosses on video seem to be of the same size so i think there is no final super boss.Einar Saukas wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2024 12:00 pm Another gray area is: should we give Renegade a "end-level boss" tag too? Switchblade clearly has 2 types of bosses - mini and super. But i don't know any other games that have both types.

Re: A request for new tags
The final boss in Renegade is clearly everyone else's boss. He carries a pistol and can shoot at the player, all others are unarmed.
Re: A request for new tags
In this case it will be easy to select a group of entries with any bosses. But i think it will be hard to perform further subdivision especially if you use such a doubtful property as genre. There were already posts about incorrect genres.
Could you please explain how you manage to do that without the knowledge of the game details? Both games - Silkworm & DNA warrior - are scrolling shooters. But first has end level bosses and the second has finall boss.

Re: A request for new tags
One option is, we can start classifying games into 2 separate tags "Multiple Boss Fights" and "Final Big Boss Fight", with possibly a few games on both.
Depending on how many titles we find for each group (and how many "gray areas"), we may decide later to merge both groups into a single "Boss Fight" tag.

Re: A request for new tags
I couldn't, but it's not a question that I would ask. I think it's a bit too much detail with too many grey areas to expect of the tags. There is always the 'thin end of the wedge' to consider with the tags overall.
Don't get me wrong though - if there's enough interest and Einar's up for it then no complaints here :–)
