1 - Scuba Dive - I remember being utterly amazed at the animation of the shark when I first played this. It was one of those ‘how can graphics get any better than this’ moments

2 - Turbo Esprit - No Turbo Esprit = No GTA. A genuinely groundbreaking game.

3 - Thanatos - Giant Dragons, what’s not to love? It’s like Game of Thrones on a Speccy.

Jungle Trouble is the only real duffer. I'd take the magazine type-in over that game.

This is an impressive set of very inspiring early games, as I look at the landscapes of Combat Lynx and I see the open-worlds of Just Cause. Turbo Esprit would be Driver if the view would just rotate around the corners. And Scuba Dive makes me shudder at how many times I've drowned and realised it's gone 04:00 in the morning playing Subnautica! It's just the fumbling control schemes that let these games down a bit as they all call for slightly more than Up/Down/Left/Right/Fire.

That and the software house shares a name (if not quite a spelling) with one of Britain's finest alcoholic-cum-naturalists, and, despite never actually living here for long, one of it's most celebrated (though completely unreadable) authors (although both brothers' travel books are an absolute joy to read).

A lot of games that felt cinematic back in the day, Not sure they had enough substance underneath to keep me playing, though.
I'm rating these based on how they play, not on how amazing or groundbreaking they were at the time.

2. Turbo Esprit - way way way ahead of its time, slightly difficult to control but the concept and execution

Even though I voted for Turbo Espirit, I must admit to spending a lot of time playing Sigma 7. It's a weird mashup of pacman and qbert like mechanics (with none of the charm of either) and some bland flying scrolly shoot-em section bolted on to make up a game that has excellent graphics and sound but zero depth and replay value. But I kept going back for more some unknown reason. Perhaps I just found it a bit relaxing to play since there wasn't much of a challenge in the game and the graphics were nice.

I expected more votes for Thanatos!

Become a dragon. Rescue a sorceress about to be sacrificed, carrying her on your back. Breath fire on a village, or grab an archer with your claws then drop him from high above to hit others. How cool is that?

By comparison, Turbo Esprit is a great game, but it's hard to feel immersed "inside the game" when viewing the road from 30 feet above the ground.

I think a game like Thanatos would normally have more votes, but Durell had some strong entries that have probably bumped it out of some people's top 3 (mine certainly).

It was a tough choice between Harrier Attack and Scuba Dive for third place, but although Scuba Dive has more, err... depth to it, I find Harrier Attack to be slightly more fun to play.

Then we have Thanatos in third place, with ten votes.

Right then, down a bit and we're looking at joint fourth place with three votes each for Combat Lynx and Harrier Attack!

Then there's two votes for Jungle Trouble, making this tricky platformer sixth.
