Aha! #1

Heard = homophone.

Nocturnal police, night + law, sounds like:

Knight Lore

Exit from underworld, straight clue as it follows Underwurlde.

Also right.

What was not right was my maths in number 5, which I have corrected.

4. ‎A magical duel written in BASIC? Ha, ostensibly! [5]

Oh that's a brilliant clue (Chaos was written in BASIC then?)

Is 3 Alien 8?
I was thinking 'Alienate', which has 8 letters, but the game title doesn't really, so it's probably wrong.

No, that's not right.

5 is Barbarian,

and coincidentally, I now want to hit you with a very heavy and sharp object, such as an axe or broadsword...

I quite liked that clue.

Just number 3 left.

How is 5 Barbarian?

I spent my lunch hour pondering mains water pressure and penicillin.

"Fighting" is the straight clue. "200,000 Pa" is 2 bars, or BAR-BAR. "Mr Fleming" is IAN (the James Bond author), not Alexander (discoverer of penicillin).

It was a devious one.

Number 3 is much more strightforward.

The full list of answers, with explanations, is below:

1. I heard nocturnal police exit from the underworld. [6,4]

KNIGHT LORE (R-Tape)

"I heard" signals this is a homophone clue. "Nocturnal police" is NIGHT LAW. "Exit from the underworld" is the straight clue.

2. ‎Ma, our tea is awful. There are insects everywhere. [8]

AMAUROTE (MatGubbins)

"Is awful" signals an anagram of "Ma, our tea". "There are insects everywhere" is the straight(-ish) clue.

3. ‎Invading Martians spoil race. [8]

MARSPORT (Spud)

"Invading Martians" is the straight clue. "Spoil" is MAR. "Race" is SPORT.

4. ‎A magical duel written in BASIC? Ha, ostensibly! [5]

CHAOS (Morkin)

"A magical duel" is the straight clue. "Written in" indicates a hidden word in "BASIC? Ha, ostensibly!"

5. ‎Fighting 200,000 Pa, Mr Fleming. [9]

BARBARIAN (Joefish)

"Fighting" is the straight clue. "200,000 Pa" is 2 bars, or BAR-BAR. "Mr Fleming" is IAN (the James Bond author).

That's all, folks!
