Interesting side note, the same photo also makes an appearance in the 1996 film The Rock:

I doubt the artist for the Doom artwork copied his pose from the North Star loading screen!

There are some similarities, particularly the 'devil'.

Doom picture is quite similar to "last stand" pictures.
I don't know if such genre exists in theory of art but if it doesn't then I've just invented it :)

Have a look:

Although a direct clone seems unlikely, I wouldn't be surprised if they were both inspired by a common ancestor.

Likely to be something along the lines of the Archangel Michael slaying demons. There's all sorts featuring that sort of pose, either just in the air or on top of a spire of rock with demons at his feet.

Probably not, but the man's pose with the bent leg, the bolt of light coming from his left, his main weapon pointed downwards, his helmet and visor, and especially the demon's teeth, yellow eyes and pointed ears/horns, are all very similar. just a shame Northstar has those boring blue metal baddies and not more demons.

Its does look like they might both be copied from the same baroque painting of a battle from Revelations. But I can't find it.

John Romero was apparently the model for the Doom cover in 1993, so there appears to be no connection between these covers.

To my eye, there isn't a significant resemblance, anyway.

Space Hunter

And an EE Doc Smith book I'm not familiar with. (I've only read his Lensman and D'Alembert books).

Except for the head, which is obviously Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken.

I'm fairly certain that the creature on the front of Nebula :

Is based on Elle from the great, glorious film Star Crash.

Just look at the robot, OK? Ignore everything else.

It doesn't seem a very strong resemblance to me, but I may have been distracted.... :) Maybe it was a loose inspiration.
