Looks like it’s only possible to score any points by pressing a key at random times. The way the game logic works (as far as I can tell from a very cursory look), is it detects a keypress only after the color of the screen changes. I even deliberately slowed emulation down to ten percent and pressed and held a key as soon as the color of the screen matched that of the border.
