Best opening sequence...

Post by 5MinuteRetro »

Inspired by just winning the latest post on the Guess the screen$ thread, I wonder... what's the best opening sequence of any ZX Spectrum game? I'll kick off with Trantor: The Last Stormtrooper, if only because it's the only one I can think of right now (and it *is* awesome!):

...and, later, we can do the best end sequence. (Or have both ideas already featured here?!)

The fireworks in Penetrator, awesome for such an early game.

I think it's near impossible to outdo Trantor. It was worth loading the game just for the intro sequence alone.

I don't know if it's just nostalgia, but for an early game, I thought the intro to Bugaboo created a great atmosphere.

Good, but Trantor remains on the lead, I’d say.

North & South was pretty good and funny.

Not perhaps as spectacular as others, but effort made, for sure.

The first four posts immediately came to mind but as soon as Amaurote was mentioned... The 128 version was astonishing for an 8-bit game alone but for a budget game on top to do that...

Trantor a close second.

Aeon is an orgy of cutscences from start to finish. They just seemed to be inexhaustibly sweating creativity while making it.

The Addams Family! It has very attractive Ocean and Paramount logos, lightning flashes, characters' heads and a text storyline, and great music. Not even a multiload (though it does require 128K). Adidas Championship Football is another good Ocean one, with a bit of multicolour.

I remember a Russian fan game too (Mortal Kombat?) that essentially had a scene demo at the beginning, with 3D rotating digitised heads of the creators. A bit overblown, but clever.

I remember loading Trantor when it was on a Crash cover tape and was amazed by the intro. I used to load it just to listen to the music.

Hi

In the modern era of Spectrum gaming I think Drift! by Zosya Entertainment wins hands down. It's simply stunning, it has everything, great visuals, great animation and really catchy music.

Freddy hardest had a small intro, and La Pulga had one of the earliest examples I've seen.

Besides that, Project: Stealth Fighter had a entire load to show an intro. And in Mig-29, the plane mutated into an F-14 for a small take-off sequence.

Some videos showing the intros...
- Freddy Hardest, past the long credits sequence and straight into the intro. It tries to show a drunk Freddy flying, colliding with an asteroid and crashing into the alien planet (rewind to see all the way through the credits).
- La Pulga, english intro.
- Project: Stealth Fighter: Intro / copy protection.
- Mig-29: Mig-29 Soviet Fighter.
