Clone Wars (Sokoban): vote

Excuse me while I shift these 31 games to very specific positions... grunt... grunt... oops, wrong place... grunt... grunt... grunt... ah! There we go!

Right, you have seven days to pick your favourite Sokoban-style ZX Spectrum game from these lot.

If you're writing a top three result, PLEASE DO SPECIFY THE PUBLISHER. As you can see, there are loads with the same game name!

Ah! One of my favourite puzzlers.

SokoBAArn is a fantastic achievement, but it's just not as easy to see what's going on as a top down map. Ditto with Bad Dream.

Einar's ZX-Soft Brasilia ones are a great collation of the classic puzzles. It looks simple, but good enough, and plays well - most important is that it doesn't easily overshoot. Trouble is that the keys are only 6789.

Shove Off is a nice little Sokoban variant from Jon's early days. Plenty of fiendish bespoke puzzles with a reasonable difficulty gradient. I liked it so much I did my own graphics crack. I feel a pure Sokoban should get my vote here though.

Sokoban Perfect is anything but. Looks nice, but not being able to see the whole screen spoils it, who cares if it scrolls. Movement and pushing are a nightmare.

I'm going to vote Sokoban by Compiler Software. Looks fantastic (though the graphics options overegg the pudding a tad), good sounds, well designed puzzles that you can see well. It could handle a bit slower and smoother maybe, but it's nearly got the lot.

Having said that, if I wanted a pure puzzle solving experience, I'd actually load up Dr Beep's Sokob-One. That's simple clear, plays well, and has QAOP (take note Einar!).

It's a shame we couldn't include my pervy adult Sokoban: Sokob-XXX

31 games! Why? Why? Sokoban is terrible!
Apologies to anyone who likes it but I'm sorry, you're wrong!

I hate it! I hate it! I hate it!

Actually, I don't hate it. I just don't like it.

Think I'll pass on voting.

I'm passing on voting too, but only because I haven't played enough of the games.

I've played Brain Sport and SokoBAAarn and I think both of those are utter genius. If I were asked to cover them in a magazine review, they would get at least 90% from me and the magazine's award (SU Classic/Crash Smash/YS Megagame/whatever).

I voted for my own SOKOB-ONE, the game is less than 1K on tape and holds 26 levels.

Same me, but when this happens, what I do to vote is to have a look to those that are better graphics (IMHO), and then play only to those games, and then decide the best. In this case, these are the ones that have better graphics, at first glance:

Crappy Crates by The Death Squad
Pushbot by David Hughes
Sokoban by Compiler Software
Sokoban Perfect by New Frontier

Now and going to play them.

How many games should I vote for? Only 1, or 3?
If something works, don't touch it !!!! at all !!!

You can only vote for one in the main poll.

If you want to nominate a top three, well, you just leave a message here, like so..

1) Your favourite
2) Your second favourite
3) Your third favourite

I award 3 points to your favourite, 2 to the next, and 1 to your third. Then I tot them all up, and that becomes what I call the 'proportional poll results'. That's what I fall back on if there's a tie-break in the main forum poll.

I'd say yep try that, but before voting have a bash at some of the ones with simple graphics. IMO Sokob-One is wayyy better than Sokoban Perfect.

I'll come up with a top 3 myself this week.

1. SokoBAAarn
2. Pushbot
3. Sokob-One

It's pretty close though. They've got a similar number of levels, all nicely designed, but are technically impressive for very different reasons.

Lots of love for R-Tape's Pushbot, which wins with 4 votes.

Jilly's Farm Volume 1 - SokoBAArn! by Bob's Stuff is in second place, with 2 votes.

Bad Dream by Proxima Software; Bozxle by Polomint; Brain Sport by Arno Van Der Hulst/Your Sinclair; Sokob-One by YRS and Sokoban by Compiler Software.

The proportional votes also supports David Hughes's creation...

Pushbot by David Hughes 10
Jilly's Farm Volume 1 - SokoBAArn! by Bob's Stuff 6
Brain Sport by Arno Van Der Hulst/Your Sinclair 3
Bozxle by Polomint 2
Sokob-One by YRS 2
Sokoban by Compiler Software 1

Cripes. Didn't expect that. Ta for the votes everyone. I'd forgotten about my old CGC entry, Sokomath. I wonder how that would have fared in this poll!
