What games would you like to be ported from MAME?
What games would you like to be ported from MAME?
Jarl, torpedos!
Hi, all!
As some of you know, I'm building an "Arcade Zx Collection", and there are 2 issues by now:
ARCZX/01: Anteater
ARCZX/02 : Tetris
I've got some games (a couple) in an advanced status, but I'd like you to give some ideas. Btw, it doesn't mean that I'm going to develop the games shown in here, but at least I'd like to know your proposes.
Here a list of games I'd like to be included in the "Arcade Zx Collection":
Botanic
This game is pure vice, kinf of PacMan, but nothing to do And it's not ported to Spectrum at all
Frogger
This is a great challenge. It is one of my favorite games of all time. The playability is supreme, and the music is beautiful. No port to Spectrum is minimally worthy of this game.
Super Glob
Does anybody know this game? So, play it, and you'll understand why I'd like to port it.
Polaris
I could be for hours killing planes and submarines, superb!!
This collection is for the Zx Spectrum 48K, so no AY chip, no 128K, etc. Please choose a game from coin op arcades, before the year 1985 if possible, and avoid scrolling games, big sprites games, ... you know. Note that my aim is to emulate a 100% of the original (graphics, music, playability, ...) and the effort is titanic
Attach a pict of the game, and tell me about it, why would you like that game to be in the collection.
Thank you!!!

Polaris has simple graphics that can be ported directly (it even has colour clash).
But I don't know about the smaller screen size and horizontal orientation. It might affect gameplay, so perhaps you'd need to redraw the sprites to be smaller. Anyway, you'd get a very faithful conversion I'm sure

Re: What games would you like to be ported from MAME?
Don't worry about that, I know how to manage it, look at the Anteater e.g.

Time Pilot (there´s an unfinished version as you can read here: viewtopic.php?p=79522#p79522)
and
Amidar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amidar
but Amidars colour-selection won´t fit well to Spectrums Attributes.
Maybe:
Nibbler
as seen on Youtube Video "Bizarre & Interesting Early 80s Arcade Games You Probably Never Played!" (from 11 min 31 sec):

Time Pilot and Amidar are great suggestions. My choice would be Zoo Keeper:
https://www.arcade-museum.com/game_deta ... e_id=10540
If they can port it to the Atari 2600 it should be doable on the Speccy, no?

Sinistar
Strangely, there weren't any official conversions of this, but if they could get it to work on an Acorn Electron (as Superior Software's "Deathstar") then it should be possible on the Spectrum too.

Bubu... while the idea of an arcade-quality Frogger is a sound idea (most of them were made in 1982 with UDGs), an even sounder idea is an arcade-quality version of Centipede.
Especially if it tears me away from Mushroom Mania after all these years. That's the challenge!

Spectribution: Dr. Jim's Sinclair computing pages.
Features my own programs, modified type-ins, RZXs, character sets & UDGs, and QL type-ins... so far!

Re: What games would you like to be ported from MAME?
Here you can find the port to Nibbler, that I think is a very good one
Nice shot, but perhaps there will be games with 3 or more requests, let's wait a few days
It's true, but I think is not so playable as the original one, sprites move like in BASIC... colors treatment is amazing thoughIvanzx wrote: ↑Wed Dec 15, 2021 7:01 pm Aaaand the blob was already converted to the speccy:

But no actually a quality port for Centipede? There must be one for sure, isn't it?TMD2003 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 15, 2021 10:17 pm @Bubu... while the idea of an arcade-quality Frogger is a sound idea (most of them were made in 1982 with UDGs), an even sounder idea is an arcade-quality version of Centipede.

Re: What games would you like to be ported from MAME?
Mushroom Mania is the one I always go to - but it's still a UDG-based game, just like all the many, many Spectrum Froggers, so it always looks less "arcadey".Bubu wrote: ↑Wed Dec 15, 2021 11:06 pmBut no actually a quality port for Centipede? And the programmers behind it were called Arcadia...

By the way the Nibbler port you linked to was an unfinished / unreleased project. Seems all that's actually released for the Spectrum is BaSnake, a snake/Nibbler game in Basic.

Yes. Sad to read this. As the last news are about two years old, it´s unlikely it will be finished. However, the same author (Stephen Parkes) mad a WIP video of Ponpoki in October 2021 which seems to be a port of Ponpoko "https://www.arcade-museum.com/game_deta ... me_id=9078Turtle_Quality wrote: ↑Thu Dec 16, 2021 6:40 am By the way the Nibbler port you linked to was an unfinished / unreleased project.

I always wanted a conversion of A.S.O. (Armored Scrum Object). It was a really good (but hard) arcade schmup that I think the Speccy could have done a passable conversion of. Especially if someone like Joffa had a bash at it.

Another great conversion would be Konami's Super Basketball:
https://youtu.be/CnjYmtR3KSA
A funny sports game in which the computer starts out with a certain score, higher than yours. You play always attacking and must score enough points in a certain time to come back and reach next level.

Re: What games would you like to be ported from MAME?
I always wanted a conversion of City Bomber, but I guess it's too fast for a humble Z80.

Another one could be Pong 15.0 Windjammers... it seems too hard to convert, but keep in mind that there are few elements moving in each screen (2 players, the disc and some barriers).

Looking at Neo Geo games, Magical Drop III should not be difficult to convert... it has been done for CPC.

Other options could be Tumblepop or The Berlin Wall.

Re: What games would you like to be ported from MAME?
Focusing on realistic stuff, Amidar should definitely be doable. This MIA game looks great:
Space Zap is a good shout, really simple gameplay and visuals, could be done almost perfectly.
Quarth/Block Hole is a great game and very Speccy-friendly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMhp8EQyh9Q
Sheriff by Nintendo is right up the Speccy's street:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07ONM3UNZeo
Venture should be well within its capabilities.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CInXyYrp9zI
Night Driver is a classic and can be almost entirely done in colour blocks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5I2oh_ecvk&
And the Spectrum still hasn't had a really accurate Missile Command or Head-On or Space Chaser.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsPD4BiY3P8
Nor a properly good Burger Time.
