Krakit -- did anyone win?

Post by 5MinuteRetro »

So I can't remember where recently I stumbled upon Krakit, but I tonight find myself wondering who if anyone won the £10,000 prize?

There were so many of these things, post Masquerade , that this one was never before on my radar. So, yes, I've Googled... but doing so is not all that fruitful (at least for me). So what do we know about this? Any magazine articles on what happened next?

Just bouncing this because my curiosity remains, and because I posted this late at night and I fear it quickly got lost in the mire.

Can't make sense of the riddle on the front cover, so I'm not gonna buy it am I. Presumably the country is Greece but is there meant to be a number and city hidden in there too?

I can't recall if a winner was ever announced. I know that Artic basically ended up transferring the liability for the competition to the US promotor. (The prize pool did increase at this point).

Krakit was little more than a slideshow of brain-teasers, iirc, which could've just as easily been a printed pamphlet.

If you're interested, then the answers are printed here...
https://www.timexsinclair.com/product/krakit/

That page links to an article that states the competition was cancelled by the promoter before the "game" was solved.

There are various articles about the US launch of the Timex game, such as here.

I'm going to hazard a guess that the city is Olympia and the number is 5, from the number of Olympic rings.

Here's all the clues, TBH they just look like gibberish to me

Each allegedly contains the name of a country, the name of a city or town and a number between 1 and 6 digits. 8bitAG has posted the link to the answers but can you work out how they were arrived at?

Frig knows. Opus 49 is the 1812 overture, so thats Moscow and 1812. But the rest....

The citation and 9 against 1 is easily googleable and leads to a fighter pilot called OHare. There is an OHare airport at Chicago, but why that should be the answer or the number 1882. No idea why would you get this in 1983.

Anyone still baffled by Krakit may be interested in Jason Dyer's All the Adventures blog posts about the game, where him & his readers attempt to solve the puzzles...
