That’s useful information. Especially as I have some spare 6522 chips (they are also one of the stock failures on Acorn BBC Micros).

Also useful information.

Thanks both :D

Kind of... I bought the C64 replica (full size not the mini) about 2 years ago. It works, but I wasn't really sure what to do with it. The joystick it came with is nice.

Of course I saw them all over the place back in the day, but never actually used one... I was too concerned my Spectrum might find out and start playing up

Spectrum: *caught Turtle_Quality at playing with a C64* "why? Why are you cheating on me?"

Turtle_Quality: "No....I can explain..."

Spectrum: "what has it what I do not have?" Am I not good enough? *starts crying*

Turtle_Quality: "I love you both equality." But you are my true love."

C64: "but.....but.....you said that I am the one."

Spectrum: "we are through...I quit."

I know. I know. Could not resist....sorry.

I have a dead one. Looks good on the self, but that is it.
I code to live (Job) and I live to code (Retro). One of them has to give!

Never owned a C64 but my best mate in the 80s did so I had a huge amount of exposure to it, as did he with the Speccy.

So we both had the best of both worlds really. There's a load of titles on the c64 that I love: Impossible Mission, Wizball, Summer Games 2, Kikstart 2, WOTEF to name but a few.

So far nearly 40% of respondents have admitted owning a c64.

I'd like to make my game Colour Beyond Time for the c64 but I have no idea about doing the loading screen.

Although this thread has encouraged me to get a bread bin case and keyboard to house my bmc64 RPI.

Bought the PCB to hook it up. Just need to find a broken c64 on eBay now!

If it's dead like switches on but black screen, just try replacing (piggyback first almost always work, to avoid pointless desoldering) a couple of 4164 (or both 4464 if it's a 64C/G) and you will have an alive one! ;)
Same for garbled/out of memory screen. RAM is the most frequent fault in (carefully handled before) old 8bit home computers, C64 makes no exception!
If it's dead like does not power on at all, first check the PSU (some of them have their own fuses, some don't), then the ON/OFF switch (they often fail) and last the internal fuse...
These directions cover more than 80% of possible faults, if you are lucky enough, you will have it up and running in minutes!

So, the C64 was the first computer I owned.

I have (deep breath) three original C64s, four C64Cs and C128. Plus a C64 Mini, a THEC64 and a C64DTV.

Oh, and this week I appeared on the BBC programme Newsnight talking about the C64’s 40th anniversary...

That's a great story, how did you get involved in the newsnight thing, I must catch it on iPlayer

I just ordered one of these to link the pi to the keyboard and joy ports of a real case.

@Mort - do you mean C64c rather than C65c? Only if you have one, let alone multiple C65’s, you must be rather rich

Well it's all interconnected.

The spectrum is my first love, and what I focus most time on. But that interest also acts as a jumping off point to look at other machines and how they solved similar problems.

A Commode 64? Why would I want one of those things for? :D
Seriously though, the Spectrum was my first computer and it was also the one that my friends owned so I was never exposed to any other 8-bits.

Yes but it hasn't seen the light of day for about 25 years by now, it's staying in a box in the garage. Maybe some day I should dig it out just to see if it's still working.

By the way, it was given to me by my cousin in the early 1990s because she did not use it that much and believed I could make better use of it...

I agree. I love the Spectrum and it will always be Number one! However, stuff like RetroPie just makes experiencing other machines so much easier, and as you say, it's good to see how other machines solved issues.

I have one of the Jerry Ellis designed DTV c64 clones built into a joystick. That, along with other emulation, is enough to enjoy what I scorned in the playground.

(Actually I don't remember anyone having a C64. Vic20, Atari 400, Atari 800, Dragon 32, BBC Model A, BBC Model B and Oric 1, yes... C64 no. Maybe I literally refused to acknowledge those people at school!)

I'd rather own shares in Northern Rock.

I remember seeing a C64 in school one day. It was running Target Renegade. My immediate thoughts were 'WTF is this sh*t?'
