What does LERM stand for?

Post by 5MinuteRetro »

File this one under: "Nothing more than idle curiosity".

On some or other Facebook group recently LERM Tape Copier was mentioned. This brought back happy memories of creating entirely-legitimate backups of my Spectrum games collection, natch. However, it also prompted both the memory that I always wondered why it was called 'LERM' -- and the realisation that I never found out.

As a decrepit grown-up I'm pretty much assuming that ‘LERM’ is an acronym but I doubt that thought occurred to me as a kid. So, today, I did just a little digging through the SC database to see if I could figure it out. I’m still none the wiser.

The first version is listed as ‘Lerm Tape Copier 4.2’, suggesting there are earlier versions? But let’s park that for now.

While later versions are tagged as being by a one Andrew Machin, version 4.2 is attributed to someone called ‘L Evans’ –- and also evidenced by the same name in the screenshot for 4.2. So, at this point I sense that L Evans is the ‘LE’ in ‘LERM’. So what could be the ‘RM’?

Or does someone here know different/better?

Bit of a stretch? Not sure I know any Andrews who go by 'Roo' but perhaps I'm not Midlands enough. Still, I suppose it's a 'maybe'.

Maybe Andrew Machin had a middle name or nick name that started with ‘R’…

Did LERM produce other software or newsletters or something, as I’ve heard of it before (and I did not actually ever own or use their tape copier software).

A bazillion chin-stroky utilities, according to this site.

Ahh, although I did not have microdrives myself back in the day, I think their microdrive utilities must have been mentioned in a magazine article. And that’s probably where I heard the name…

As a 12-years old kid back in 1985 here in Greece, I came across a pirated copy (yes, of the copier program itself) which had a handwritten indication "LERM TC" on the cassette label and I was wondering what TC stands for!!!

Well, we've got the TC nailed down, at least. :D And yes, my copy of LERM was... a copy. I know this fact wasn't lost on me even at the time.

I suppose my greek copy was better, as it had Trans Express on the other side
