Nintendo's (and Miyamoto's) stance on this has changed over the years. At one point, Mario had no last name, but the current official view is that, yes, his name is Mario Mario.

So it was said in the "examine other people's wishes" section of Super Mario RPG. The further philosophical question is: in what version of the Mushroom Universe is Mario a great plumber? He spends all the time somewhere else, chasing after his girlfriend who's been abducted yet again - to the point where I have my suspicions that the princess prefers Bowser and isn't resisting capture - so who stays behind and does the plumbing that the Mario Bros. are famous for? Surely, Luigi does it all. And only in the 1993 film that everyone hates do we ever see Mario doing any plumbing.

It's time to alter reality to what it should be:

I want to be a great plumber, like my brother Luigi.

It's been that for quite some time hasn't it? I've known about it for donkeys years - sometime around when Luigi's Mansion was released for the Gamecube, or it may have even been when the Bob Hoskins movie came out. Mario Mario and Luigi Mario.
