FRGCB - Finnish Retro Game Comparison Blog

Post by Skaepoy »

It's been a while since updating the thread at WOS, but I guess a full migration is in order.

In case some of you have no idea what this is, the Finnish Retro Game Comparison Blog is a thing I've been doing for almost ten years now, with the intention of making very thorough comparisons of old games (ca. 1981-1991) in as unbiased a manner as it is possible for me to do. Since I have no expertise in coding, I can only base my observations on how all the versions of the game feel to play, regardless of how good or bad they compare to other games of their kind on the same platform and in context of what's possible, or what was thought possible back in the day. What matters is, how the versions compare against themselves. All the comparisons are made by using emulators, unless a game requires further examination on real hardware.

Since a few years ago, I started working on FRGCB's YouTube channel with comparison accompaniment videos, as well as an unemulated footage-based series titled "My Nostalgia Trip Games" (currently going at episode 63), and some other things. If you want to subscribe to the channel, here's the link.
https://www.youtube.com/@frgcbdude1484

:dance

Now, today's comparison entry on the blog is a game I wanted to avoid making for years, since I knew it to be an abomination across all platforms. But then something unexpected happened, and I got involved in a James Bond theme songs project, and we have two concerts booked for tomorrow and the day after here in my home town. So, just to balance that epicness out, I decided to finally write a comparison of A VIEW TO A KILL, but I actually found it surprisingly interesting to write about, even with the severe lack of quality. Of course, a video accompaniment has been prepared for the occasion by yours truly, which can be found near the end of the text. By the way, if anyone knows with certainty, which platform this game was originally designed for (my guess is Spectrum), it'd be a nice thing to update into the comparison.

http://frgcb.blogspot.com/2023/04/james ... -1985.html

The other Spectrum-related game comparison I did after my last update at the WOS forum was TRAILBLAZER, which was a Commodore 16 original. Can't say I was too well pleased with the Spectrum version, but at least it has more redeeming qualities to it than the Atari ST version.

http://frgcb.blogspot.com/2023/03/trail ... -1986.html

That's it for now; I suppose the next update here will happen sometime during the summer.

I'm reading your blog for years. The effort you put into each comparison is really remarkable. I like it.

Nice!!!

I just added FRGCB to the list of supported sites. Now if you would like links to your blog pages to appear in SpectrumComputing (also any other site using ZXDB), you can add them yourself as follows:
  • Access https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/zxdb/ad ... hanges.php
  • Type the game name (or ID), then click "Show details about the selected title/entry"
  • Scroll down to "Show all existing links"
  • Copy/paste your blog page link into "Related (external) link #1", then select website "FRGCB" and language "English"
  • Click "Generate SQL code for ZXDB", then click "Publish your SQL code"
Every new link will appear after the next ZXDB update.

Well, wouldn't that be something! :D Thanks for the instructions, I'll take a closer look at how it goes after this weekend.

I'm reminded of a Gary Lineker quote....

FRGCB is a simple concept. Skaepoy does a careful analysis of every aspect of every version and at the end the C64 always wins.

Not always, but I admit, I would rather make comparisons of games that I enjoy at least to some extent. There are some games in the blog that have the ZX Spectrum as the winner, and sometime during the first couple of years, some people complained there was a clear preference towards Speccy games. And also, 99% of the time, whenever it's an arcade original, the original will win. Can't please anybody with these things, really. Problem is, I strongly dislike isometric adventure games (apart from the Last Ninja series) and wireframe 3D games in general, so many of potentially superior Spectrum games go unnoticed. If I had a partner in this blog who would make comparisons of games that I can't be bothered with, the content would be different. Also, the scoring system is stupid and unrealistic at best, so the thing would be to read the entire comparison and just trust what the playability score says, that is if you agree with any of it. But it's all still how I experience them, for better or worse.

Well it seems I've gone back to old habits, since it took me a while to update this thread here, but now's as good a time as any, since to my utter horror, this marks the day that the Finnish Retro Game Comparison Blog has actually been around for exactly 10 years! Well, to anyone who's interested in statistics and other nonsense, I prepared a little "thank you" type of a blog post for the occasion.
http://frgcb.blogspot.com/2023/08/frgcb ... cking.html
Additionally, I prepared a new special page for the blog, where I keep record of my retro games collection (up to Wii and PS3), mostly for my own convenience, but if anyone's interested, you can see it here: http://frgcb.blogspot.com/p/collection.html

So what else? Since my last update here, I've finally gotten around to adding some links for the Spectrum Computing game pages, which I still need to continue on when I find more time for it. Also, a couple of mentionable Spectrum-related comparisons were posted:
- Stop the Express - http://frgcb.blogspot.com/2023/07/stop- ... -1983.html
- Gyroscope - http://frgcb.blogspot.com/2023/07/gyros ... -1985.html

And a couple of some not quite as Spectrum-friendly comparisons:
- Grand Prix Simulator - http://frgcb.blogspot.com/2023/06/grand ... -1987.html
- Panther - http://frgcb.blogspot.com/2023/05/panth ... -1986.html

But as I mention in the 10th anniversary blog post, it's time I start digging into games that are more C64-unfriendly, so if you want to throw in any suggestions on games of that sort that I should do comparisons of, feel free to do so.

Anyway, for those of you, who might have been following FRGCB since the early days, thanks for keeping up with my nonsense for these 10 years!

Since Tuesday, FRGCB has now gotten its very own Facebook page/profile, so if you feel like you want to keep yourselves better updated on all things FRGCB, head there and make a friend request. Yeah, I was lazy and created the page as a person instead of business. Oh well.
https://www.facebook.com/FRGCB

Today, though, I posted the first comparison after the 10th anniversary, and as promised, it's a much more non-C64 centric comparison. The game in question is SCUBA DIVE, which I had been trying to spare for a better occasion, but then I found out that it's actually an Oric original, so why not do it now. Well, the link for that is below, so click on to read it.
http://frgcb.blogspot.com/2023/08/scuba ... -1983.html

Now, I'll be taking a break from doing any comparisons until October, because I have to focus on a couple of big ones to be posted that month. Still, some things might be happening on FRGCB's YouTube channel, so keep an eye on that, if that's more of your thing than reading. :P

Thanks @Skaepoy,

I never knew it was an Oric game first.

I love your blog mate, keep up the good work!

I'd like to know where you got your info about Scuba Dive though. Are you sure you're not getting it confused with Harrier Attack when you say it originated on the Oric?

I've interviewed Mike for Retro Gamer, and I'm pretty sure he designed and created Scuba Dive on the ZX Spectrum. Maybe the Oric version was developed in tandem?

Thanks for your kind words, Wizwords! I actually read the info about Scuba Dive being an Oric original from this very site, https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/4 ... Scuba_Dive, and then investigated it by googling for a bit and finding nothing to contradict this info. I just kind of took it for granted that the info would have been correct. If Ron Jeffs was the one behind the concept according to SC, and he was the one who actually programmed the Oric version, for me that's kind of a clear pointer towards that. But you're right, maybe they were developed in tandem, it would be nice to know specifics.

Anyway, I came here to spam about my latest effort, which took me almost the whole of last month, and almost 10 years of procrastinating prior to that. Part 1 of 2 from this year's Ocean October, I give you the Konami arcade classic, YIE AR KUNG-FU, with two vastly different Spectrum versions included, of which I came to prefer the 128k version over my previous favourite (C64) during this comparison.. if only barely. See for yourselves!
(Also including the other Yie Ar Kung-Fu for MSX and Famicom, so it's a two-fer.)

This is from your article in Retro Gamer 210:
Working closely with Durell – although technically freelance – was coder Mike Richardson, who takes up the story of how Scuba Dive came about. “Robert wanted a game that was like Frogger and we had a few hours of discussion at Durell’s offices along with Ron Jeffs, and probably others.” While Mike is very far from a fan of diving himself (“I have a fear of drowning, and can’t swim more than a few metres,” he admits), the idea of a subaquatic adventure took hold as both he and Ron – Durell’s in-house programmer – left to develop the game separately, with the original outline as discussed with Robert.

Haven't looked at this (YET -- sorry) but my main annoyance with "comparison" stuff on YouTube etc. is that they usually don't know anything about a Speccy, and will run it in 48k mode, even if the 128 is better.
So you see a review like "no sound, no music" -- which can be totally untrue.
Just saying. I'm sure you know better. I'll check it out some time.

Well, it's been a couple of days since I posted the second of two Konami/Ocean/Imagine comparisons for this month's theme, but I didn't have the time to update this thread until now. So, yeah, another stupidly long comparison done, this time the game in question being COMBAT SCHOOL. Similarly to Yie Ar Kung-Fu, this one had been on my to-do list since the early days of FRGCB, but in the case of Combat School, it wasn't even possible to make as reliable a comparison as I would have wanted until I bought myself an Amstrad CPC last year. Then again, I still haven't been able to play the original trackball-controlled arcade game, so the comparison is based on the joystick-operated version. Well, in case you haven't somehow read it already, click on the link, grab a cuppa, and read on. As I said, it's a properly long one, but there's also a stupidly long self-made accompaniment video at the end of the comparison, if you want to see all the gameplay footage I could get. :geek:

Today sees the release of the last actual comparison entry for 2023, as for December, I will be preparing a couple of special entries. This time, we have an addition to a much neglected genre of breakout clones: IMPACT! from Audiogenic, 1987. I had this one sitting useless in my archive for a couple of years, because the PC version didn't want to co-operate with DOSbox, until I found out about PCem earlier this year. A video of all versions is included, as usual.

Don't think I've ever played that game, in all the time I had either a Speccy or an Amiga.

Kudos for the effort in comparing all these versions, especially as this one includes the 16 bit machines.

Despite all appearances, I do recommend to try it out, perhaps particularly the Amstrad and Spectrum versions, because they differ from the original enough, while maintaining good playability, to make them more interesting.

Including 16-bit versions is just part of what the blog is about, so nothing out of the ordinary there - just a minor miracle that I could get the DOS version finally working. But thanks anyway. :)

Well I'm a couple of days late in announcing it here, but FRGCB goes into Christmas mode with a list of New (and occasionally Unique) Christmas (and winter) themed games for classic systems. Of course, the Speccy is represented with a handful of games, but if I missed some important ones from the list, feel free to throw in a comment to support your missing favourites. ;)

Anyhoo, have a Merry Christmas and a Fantastic New Year, and see you later - most likely in February, but who knows! :xmas

Right, time to start off 2024 with something I wasn't planning on actually writing a comparison of, and then did it anyway. The problem with DAN DARE: PILOT OF THE FUTURE, as some of you will undoubtedly be aware, which I wasn't, is that the game is completely different on all three platforms it was released on. Regardless of that, I decided to take a look beyond the surface and see how many differences are there in the three versions, and do a vastly different sort of a comparison than usual. Click below to read and/or watch a video comparison of all three Dan Dare versions.

Time goes by fast when you're having fun, is what they say, but for me at least, time seems to go even faster when I'm working, cause my time for blogging has become rather limited again as of late. So, I have had to limit this year's Firebird February to just two game comparisons. The first one, released today, is of a French game originally made for the Oric Atmos, with COCK' IN as its original title - and it wasn't even published by Firebird. Of course, us non-French retrogamers will know it better by its Firebird title, CHICKIN CHASE. The arguably horrible cover art is probably more famous than the game itself these days, but it is a fun little game, and despite its limited content, surprisingly different across all seven platforms.

Wonder if that was deliberately named based on the rooster's activity in the game.
