Is there a list of games containing sound samples?

On the creation of AY or Beeper music, including the packages used to do so.

Another one is Chimera, which from what I remember has a couple of samples.

- One saying "Chimera" on the menu screen. I think the voice pitch/speed is changed for this each time.

- The other one when you die which says something like: "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhh...!!!"

The latter almost made me jump out of my chair when I first heard it.
That reminds me of Pippo. Isn’t there a shriek when you fall off the playing field?

Thanks! :)

I didn't do a full check, but at least Nodes of Yesod is missing in the Software Speech one.

Little correction on the list, it is not The Last Corridor, it is The Light Corridor :)

 To me the speech in Meteor Storm always sounded like 'Prepare to be defeated. Prepare to be defeated. '. Not even sure if it is meant to be speech.

It's definitely meant to be speech. It's just very distorted because, as a 16K game, it's got to be played back from contended memory and that messes up the timings.

I believe the same code is used in Easyspeak and The Chess Player, where the speech can be at least a little bit more intelligible because it's running from the upper RAM.

Would it make sense to split the first into "48k/Bleeper Speech" & "AY Speech" ?

I guess it should be theoretically possible to produce a 48K "fix" that moves the player routine into uncontended memory. Then we may, at last, be able to agree on what it does say.

Or you could run it on an emulator that lets you disable contention, like Spin. I had a go and the sound is still pretty messed up - presumably the code which was used to record the sample was also run from contended memory, meaning the distortion is baked into the data.

While I'm here, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Auf Wiedersehen, Monty yet.

I have to mention the opening sample from this game, because it's been my favorite since the moment I found out about it. :)

Nearly forgot - The Dark includes a complete Currah-µSpeech style phonetic library as it 'reads' the backstory to you.
(Admittedly it would be hard to make out what it's saying in places if you weren't reading along with the text at the same time...)

I suspect the game uses a ton of data compression and needs a big memory buffer, so those samples and pictures are quickly wiped to make room as soon as the actual game starts! Nevertheless, it is a bl**dy brilliant touch.

I had a heated argument about this with my brother at the time. I, correctly, argued that it was saying 'Meteor Alert' while he was adamant that it was just a weird siren noise.

It drove a wedge between us that remains to this day.

Good idea! However I don't know which games are AY or not, someone would need to provide both lists...

I can't believe a game has digitised speech that's so ropey that everyone has their own interpretation of what it says  Someone should do a poll...

(although @Mpk is correct, it's 'Meteor alert')

Starglider has some speech (Clare Edgley), presumably AY? "Missile Launched" is the one I remember.

Yeah I'm sure it says "Meteor Storm", albeit a crackly version of it.

I remember the 1st time I heard it, I was upstairs in my bedroom in 1984/5 and was going through a tape of games someone had recently copied for me. I had never heard Spectrum speech before this. As soon as I heard it I ran downstairs & exclaimed to my bemused family, who were sat in the front room watching TV, "MY SPECTRUM'S JUST SPOKE TO ME!!!".........Tumbleweed!

Well, I was amazed. If no one else was.

Quoting some bloke from Norwich, about a certain almost terrible game (it was just "barely animated rubbish"):
If your ninja does something right, he shouts "Aye!"
If he gets hurt, he shouts "Aah!"

The voice was Melody White, who was credited in the inlay for "Music / Sound FX" alongside David Whittaker. Judging by what the Olivers said on the day, it seems she was a bit of a rebel, probably didn't know a lot about computers, and had turned up on their doorstep on a rainy day in a lot of distress after having a blazing row with her parents. So they dried her off and asked her if she wouldn't mind doing them a quick favour while she was there. Hold this microphone...

For some reason, the Olivers' description of her makes me think of Jude from the very right-on and all-but-forgotten Channel 4 sitcom, Dream Stuffing (which I only found out about when looking up lists of dreadful sitcoms to see why ITV's reputation with sitcoms was so terrible... but that's a story for another forum).
