The first 272 bytes are loaded by the ROM into addresses 23755-24026, and then control is handed over to the custom loading routine. At this point in the tape block there is a series of 32 1s (00000001), which I presume is used as the pilot tone for the rest of the data that follows. Very peculiar indeed.
Yes, that's really clever - and when looking at the info of the TAP, I understand how it works, as the BASIC program loaded bye the ROM is only the first 272 bytes.

By the way, Removal Deluxe is similar: it also has a loading routine in what is contended memory on a standard 48K Spectrum.
I can't get this to load on either ZX Spectrum 48K or ZX Spectrum 128K in both SPECTRUM and USR0 mode.

It seems to be starting the custom loader fine, but it just hangs when loading is done. Used the TAP and a TZXDuino device

Perhaps the pause between blocks is too short in these images, so they only work in certain emulators.
Yeah, I got Removal Deluxe to load on Fuse as well - not sure which settings I did fiddle with

Okay. I have tried Krakatoa in JSSpeccy3: Must be loaded using LOAD "" CODE

Here are some 128K games that don't work in JSSpeccy on this site:
FWIW, I haven't been able to get Fuse to LOAD and run these games either.

It seems the tape version requires a Pentagon, but the disk version works with the Spectrum.

You mean the tape versions? Because I just tried the TR-DOS version of Figus in Fuse and it loaded and ran fine.
The tape versions might be automatic conversions, likely untested to begin with.
