Atic-Atac Isometric Version

People are still making stuff for the Sinclair related machines. Tell us about new games and other software that runs on the Spectrum, ZX80/ZX81, Pentagon and Next.

Sad news but we’re looking at other options.
Original PC version is getting closer to completion abd Bob still continues on the 128K version.

I read this tweet the other day. I thought Melkhior's Mansion had started out as a NEXT game and that the developer(s) decided to port it over to the 128k Speccy. I take it from this that there will only be the 128 version released?

Wrong way around. The original is the PC version and the Next version is (well...was) a conversion handled by another developer. We're still looking at other options for the Next version, though, and the 128K version is still in development.

Out of interest how much dev had been done on the NEXT version?

I'm not entirely sure what the latest state was. It was all being done using the developer's bespoke development tools, and when we introduced the caverns into the game, the Next isometric engine (or something) was having to be modified to handle those changes. There was a decision to hang back a bit with the Next dev in order for us to get to an almost final state on the original before work would resume.

Spectrum graphics can look amazing. This is a perfect example. I don't have words to describe how good the art looks.

The speccy version looks drop dead gorgeous! This and the PC version look like they will be well worth the wait! Kudos to everyone involved!

This really is shaping up to be one of the best looking Speccy games. I’d go as far to say that I prefer the monochrome look rather than the full colour PC version.

No, just the PC version. You’ll still have a bit to wait for the Spectrum version and only Bob can truly answer that.

:o
jk I love seeing the mono versions! As a rule, I’ve always kept or tried to keep the colours to a minimum when doing the original graphics. There are exceptions, as I can bend my own rules and restrictions if I want ;) ,but I always aimed for no more then 3 colours per object. The use of bright and non-bright colours together are incredibly rare (though I did do that a couple of times). The black outline and highlight are always the exceptions, though. It’s hard to explain :D

Looks great!

It also seems that it became something more than Atic Atac remake with many new features.

Thanks Ralf!

Yip, the demo we released last year is pretty much Atic Atac, with a couple of bits missing due to various reasons, and probably the version we originally set out to do before we decided to alter it ever so slightly. The final version has Sir Stamperlot doing a similar story with Atic Atac, and each character has a slightly different (and harder) quest but all leading to you escaping the mansion when you complete your quest.

I’d love to get the 128k version out at the same time, but as I’m always playing catch-up to the lead PC version it’s doubtful. I have made a promise that it’ll be available for the Speccy’s 40th at the latest

redballoon Hooray!!

From the latest Kickstarter update:
We are pleased, ecstatic and over the moon to report that Kev Brady will be back in the driving seat to deliver the Spectrum Next version of Melkhior’s Mansion, in all of its 8-bit glory. It is hoped that it will be released some time in 2022 and that is as specific as we can get! The PC version is not quite finished yet so be patient!"
I'm so chuffed about this. There can't be a game better suited to the Next than Melkhior's Mansion.

Saw this on Twitter this morning and can't wait for the Next version. With the update on Next production late last week and the fact that it's full steam ahead, I'm really rather excited about getting my Next.
