Reviews for Huxley Pig (#2401)

Review by The Dean of Games on 07 Apr 2019 (Rating: 3)

1991 Alternative Software (UK)
by Richard Stevenson and Paul Bellamy

At first glance Huxley Pig looks like a neat game, very colorful, with cute cartoonish characters and an easy to play sort of Pyjamarama type game. Then you discover this is a multi level game, with very different levels. That could be okay if the levels were all good or at least one of them was great. Instead you just get average all around. The first level is by far the best, the one I described first, but ends up being to easy and short, and the long lasting appeal fails. Then there are the other levels, which are just there to fill the tape and allow the publisher to enrich the card inlay with the designation of a multi level game.
These levels are just below average, early 1980 schmups look-a likes, one with a plane, another with a boat, in-between there is a puzzle game, very nice looking and in a way original, but nothing particularly mind blowing. If the first level was enhanced and taken more seriously and then turned into just one game, it could have been great, even if the idea was already dated in 1991, but at least you would end up with a good pick-and-use objects type of game.

Of all the Alternative Software licensed games I've played this has to be among the very worst. It's just unplayable. Huxley's jump is atrocious, jumping over creepy crawlers is almost non-existent because of his crap jump, and the game ends when you run out of score which usually happens very quickly. And playing easy and hard made absolutely no difference to me whatsoever. This sucks, it's one of the very worst game I've played from Alternative, it's worse than Postman Pat, it's worse than Fireman Sam, it's worse than Sooty and Sweep, it's even worse than BMX Ninja, it's THAT bad.
