Reviews for Scumball (#4383)

Scumball [Bulldog Software]
by Peter Gough (Software Creations)

An Ultimatesque budget game in the mould of Atic Atac, Underwurlde, and the celebrated Bubblebus Software clone, Starquake. So, lots of flip-screens to explore, a map to be made, and items to be found [grenades], but the fact is that your cute big-eyed robot is very quick and agile, and it's a pleasure even only whizzing around the rooms shooting at anything, smoothly moving through colourful and pleasant sewers, although I can't guarantee about the smell.

Lovely graphics here but the gameplay falls a bit on the flat side for me personally. Saying that it was £1.99 and given the other games released on Mastertronic's Bulldog label this is easily the best game I've come across on that particular label.

LINDA is a robot in charge of cleaning the sewer of an alien planet.
She(?) as to collect eight grenades which are scattered in this big maze sewer and bring each to a green slime monster who will devour the bombs. After all eight grenades are destroyed she can then destroy the slime monster.

The games looks are quite similar with Starquake & the Tantalus saga, although inferior. But the gameplay differs a bit, not only it is simpler, but also it plays faster and crazier. It's mostly a shoot 'em up in a maze, and it's fun.

This is a very nice game, it is not a wonder but I did'nt know it back in its day.

the character reminds me that of the great Starquake and Terminus/Tantalus as you, Gentlemen gracefully pointed out.

A cheap alternative to Starquake and a pretty good one. Doesn't quite match the quality but still holds up as a playable title. Quite enjoyed this in fact.

I always had a soft spot for this budget platform/exploration/shooter hybrid that reminds of Starquake. In the game, you guide LINDA (Laser Incorporated Nasties Disposal Android) around a futuristic sewer network, looking for eight bombs that will be needed to get rid of the mega-baddie, the Green Slime, lurking in the depths of the place.
Action is slick and fast, graphics are clean and colorful and sound is adequate for the 48K. Of course originality is not a strong point of Scumball, but I find it to be well above the average £1.99 (or Lit. 5000) title.
