PJ is a surprisingly good platformer, which although it may not match the eccentricity of Manic Miner is a entertaining romp through various levels featuring snakes, spikes, fire traps, ghosts, skulls et al that you must avoid to reach your ultimate goal - the treasure that lies buried deep within the depths of the pyramid.
Go on give it a try, you'll like it I'm sure!
Zynaps, 25 Dec 2008 (Rating: 5)
Zynaps is a horizontal scrolling shoot-em up with excellent full color, clash free (well almost!) graphics and sound fx.
This is one of the best of this genre that you will find on the speccy and one that's worth playing with oodles of things to shoot, plenty of weapon types to collect and awesome amount of action to keep you entertained for many hours to come!
Apart from the irony that Daley Thompson in this game was a white sprite, the game did little wrong in terms of providing some good joystick waggling action (fnar).
The events themselves are quite entertaining to play and there is good use of sound and colour. Plus the game lends itself well to pick-up-and-play variety since the controls are simplistic enough. All in all a nice title that will give you a couple of hours of diversion but there isn't enough in it to keep your attention for sustained periods.
Top Gun the game is a sodding poor effort at bringing the action and excitement of the movie to the speccy.
It's neither a simulation nor a good dog-fight game and you'll be bored witless within 15 minutes of starting it up.
Do yourself a favour and play Fighter Pilot instead!
Batman, 10 Feb 2009 (Rating: 5)
Batman was the first isometric game I ever played on the speccy and it blew me away. So much so that when I later played Knightlore I was a bit underwhelmed.
This Jon Ritman and Bernie Drummond effort was a very polished and addictive adventure romp that was challenging to play and fun to explore.
Batman can collect various powerups to boost his abilities and there are various bat-accessories that must be acquired before he can begin his mission to rescue Robin from the clutches of the Joker and the Riddler.
There is a distinctive comic book feel to the game right down to the super cute Batman sprite who taps his toes impatiently if you spend too much time thinking rather than doing!
The atmosphere of the catacombs is brilliantly recreated and despite the cute sprites, there is an omnipresent feeling of danger and seriousness that underlie the whole game.
A must play on the speccy!
Jetpac, 25 Aug 2009 (Rating: 5)
Jetpac is the quintessential 8-bit arcade action game. It features tons of shooting, dodging and collecting, along with tons of very appealing colourful sprites and some excellent arcadey sound fx.
Even though it has many levels, all of them feature one screen with 3 platforms which adds a strange element of strategy to an otherwise all out arcade game.
This is easily one of Ultimate's finest games. In fact, in my book, this *is* Ultimate's finest! :)
At first glance, Demolition may look like another below-average-Arkanoid-clone, but in fact it's quite an enjoyable little number.
Your challenge in this game is to break all the bricks but without losing all the glass panes that line the other end of the wall. It's a nice twist on the original game and makes it a lot more interesting than Thro' the wall anyway!
To add to that, the graphics are simple and clean and the sprites move around very smoothly thanks to it being machine coded.
Worth a look!
Chess, 14 Dec 2009 (Rating: 4)
Otherwise known as PSION Chess, this was one of the better chess software on the speccy.
It featured a variety of difficulty levels (although after level 4, it took a fair bit of time to come up with a move), moves list, hints, custom board setup, black & white mode as well as colour, etc.
Well worth a look if you're into chess!
