SUB === CREATED BY JOHN M. DORA You are the captain of the anti-submarine frigate "Anachronous" ... Your task is to destroy the soviet "Yankee" class sub., as seen on your sonar display. A 'Real Time' submarine hunt Simulation. To load Sub, type: LOAD "" (press enter). On the display are given the sub's heading, speed, estimated depth, and (in two options) it's range. As a guide to it's location, you are told which quadrant it is in. You must change your speed and direction to intercept the enemy and attempt to destroy it with depth charges. Controls (may be pressed at any time during play): 'P' = Port; 'S' = Starboard; 'V' = Speed; 'D' = Depth at which depth charges will be set to explode. After pressing any one of the above keys, you will have to enter the required value (e.g. Port 30 of rudder). After selecting the required value, press enter, and the game will continue. Pressing 'M' will return the rudder to midships. Press 'A' to launch depth charges. There are three ranks to choose from: 1 = Captain; 2 = Lieutenant; 3 = Midshipman. 1 is the hardest, 3 the easiest. If you select 'Captain' you will not be given a display of the enemy's range. There are five skill levels, 1 being the hardest, 5the easiest. The maximum speed of your frigate is 35 knots. The maximum rudder that you can select is 45 degrees. Tips on play No matter how good you think you may be, always select the easiest skill levels until you have mastered the Controls. Example: If the sub's heading is shown as N.E.: bring the frigate round till it is heading to the north east, bring the frigate up to full speed, keeping a watch on the range of the enemy. The range will usually decrease for a while (sometimes you will even run straight into the sub). When the range starts to increase, bring your speed down to 5, and remain at that speed whilst the range decreases. (The enemy normally comes onto your sonar screen at a range of less than 6). If the enemy does not come into range before the range increases, increase your speed to around 15, and keep a watchful eye on the range, whilst trying to match your speed to his. Gradually if you are headed in the same direction as the sub., and follow this procedure, he will usually come into range sooner or later. If, and when he does appear on the screen: try and manoeuvre so that you drop the depth charge into his path, so that it explodes (allowing time to reach the sub's depth) as the sub reaches it.
