SWORD AND SHIELD ================ Sinclair User say "Terrific wargame . . . very addictive". They gave Sword & Shield Five Stars! (and this was when they thought the game was £5.95). At the end of the year, the number of crops will be counted and the tax rate that you have set will be applied to the harvest giving you your income. With this you can buy more Knights, Infantry, start more farms or simply build up the amount of money in your treasury. THE PLAYERS DRAGONS: There can be up to four dragons roaming the land at any one time. KNIGHTS: Knights are the second strongest piece on the board, yet are the fastest. You can have up to 50 knights on your side to: (a) Collect treasure. (b) Conscript Peasants to become Infantry. INFANTRY: The third strongest piece. Like knights you can have up to 50 at any one time. MASKED MEN: The weakest of the pieces. They are not under your control. PEASANTS: Peasants do not move or fight, they just tend their chosen crop. THE GAME MOVING PIECES - Command Mode: Once a piece is in view press ‘C’ and a black cursor will appear. Press ‘C’ again, the name, type, strength, speed and current direction of movement will appear of the piece you have chosen. To change the speed use the up cursor key to increase and the down cursor key to decrease. When happy with what you have set press ‘C’ again. Your orders will be carried out. OBSTACLES: Pieces will move in the direction you have set until they reach either the end of the land, a hill or another piece. In either case they will adjust their course to move past. This may mean that you might have to adjust their course. Should any piece pass over a crop, the crop will be trampled into the ground. CONSCRIPTION: By placing your shadow over a Peasant with a Knight adjacent, press ‘C’ and conscription will take place. The Peasant will become an Infantryman under your command and his farm will go to waste. TREASURE: Treasure chests, full of groats, appear at the end of each year at neighbouring castles. Only Knights can collect treasure, once collected the Knights return home. BATTLE: A piece should try to move onto a piece of land occupied by an enemy piece, the landscape will shift to the battle area. Fighting is automatic. END OF THE YEAR: The first screen will give you the opportunity to save the game. The second will show you: (a) The tax rate. (b) Crops grown in the year. (c) Income. (d) Treasury balance. Press ‘A’ to alter the taxes or ‘C’ to continue. The third will show the purchase screen: (a) Number of Knights. (b) Number of Infantry. (c) Number of farms. (d) Treasury balance.
