SAM COUPÉ SOFTWARE - LOADING INSTRUCTIONS ========================================= The SAM Coupé had an internal 3.5" disc drive (effectively a +D tweaked to work on the new hardware, to nobody's surprise), as well as a socket to connect a tape recorder. Loading on this machine isn't too far removed from a Spectrum with a +D attached. Manual DOS startup: ------------------- To use a disc, you'll first need to insert a disc with a boot sector - Bo Jangeborg's Flash!, which is mentioned in the User Guide, will do nicely: https://www.worldofsam.org/products/flash Insert this into drive 1 and type: BOOT 1 This will start the disc operating system. Type DIR and if it lists the directory, you're ready to go. If it auto-boots, reset the emulator (with its reset option, don't restart it in its entirety). Switching between tape and disc: -------------------------------- If your SAM Coupé emulator has its DOS loaded, you can switch between the two using the commands: DEVICE d1 (load/save to disc 1) DEVICE d2 (load/save to disc 2) DEVICE t (load/save to tape; save at normal speed) DEVICE t35 (load/save to tape; save at high speed) Loading instructions for the main emulators: -------------------------------------------- SIM Coupé 1.1 alpha: The " key is mapped to SHIFT + 2, exactly as it is on a UK keyboard. DISC: Select "File -> Open" and select the disc image. (It is possible to type BOOT 1 and DIR even without any disc in the drive on this emulator, for ease of use.) Type LOAD"AUTOMOM" and it loads. TAPE: Select "Tools -> Tape Browser" and click on the folder icon. Select the tape image and close the window. (F3 is a shortcut to the Tape Browser.) Type LOAD"" and it will run instantly. ASCD 1.00: The " key is mapped to SHIFT plus apostrophe on a UK keyboard, which resembles an American keyboard, or a Mac. DISC: Manually start the DOS using the method above. Select "File -> Insert Disk 1..." and select the disc you want (or Flash! initially, to get the DOS started). Type DEVICE d1 followed by LOAD"AUTOMOM" and it loads. TAPE: Type LOAD"" and it loads - pretty much instantly. Speccy 5.5: The " key is mapped to the # key on a UK keyboard. DESELECT "Autoload Tapes and Disks" from the Hardware menu. Select "Hardware -> Computer Model" and select SAM Coupé mode (as this is mainly a Spectrum emulator). DISC: Unfortunately this appears to be completely broken, as the Flash! disc (which has a boot sector) stops the emulator with some coloured pixels on the right hand side of the screen. TAPE: Select "File -> Open" and select the tape file. Type LOAD"" and ENTER. Select "Hardware -> Start or Stop Tape" and it loads - not instantly, but tape images that have been recorded at regular speed will load faster than normal, even if "Fast Tape Loader" is not selected. ZEsarUX 9.1: This is a multi-multi-multi machine emulator! Click on the screen to bring up the 128K Spectrum-esque menu. Select "Machine -> Miles Gordon Technology -> SAM Coupé" to start the emulation without the characteristic colour test stripes. The " key is mapped to the ] key on a UK keyboard, for those who can work out how to get tapes to load on this emulator without using the Smart Load feature, or the method I've described below. DISC: ZEsarUX has no SAM Coupé disc emulaton at version 9.1. TAPE: Click the screen again and select "Storage -> Tape". Click on "File []" underneath "--Input Real Tape--". Navigate - if you can get through the DOS-style menus - to the required file, which MUST be stored on the same drive as ZEsarUX is installed. (E: in my case, because I'm odd.) The program will start loading in the background - press ESC twice to get back to the emulation. The tape will load at normal speed and a progress indicator will be seen at the bottom of the window.
